how much should i pay for this fc?

i found a 1987 gxl in white with blue int.
perfect body minus paint
good interior, factory cd player and rear seats all leather.
non running. been parked since 02, last on the road inspected in 96.
i havent talked to the owner about it yet, but her neighbors said she wants to see it running again.

thats about it.
so what would be a fair price on it, based on what we know?

I just paid $200 for a non-running GXL that had been sitting for 6 years. Straight body, complete interior and faded paint... I wouldn't pay more than $500 for something like that--but it would be cool if it had low miles. Mine had 140k on it.

Should have it up and running the day after tomorrow... Turbo.

Depends on whether you want a project or an out-of-box drivable investment. No more than $1k for it if you're hoping to be able to ever get close to as much out of it as you'll put in it.

About $700 if it really is perfect. But personally I am a cheap filipino so I would pay about $400. But thats just me.

Figure out what is wrong with the car, get a quote from the Mazda house on what it will cost for parts and labor, then go to www.KBB.com and get an estimated value from an individual... Take the repair quote and the estimated value sheet to her and make an offer... Remind her that a 20 yr old car that sits for 5+ years is probably going to have much deeper issues than what originally cause it to be broken down...

Well... It's hard to buy a car from an unmotivated buyer. Plus, you don't have the extra bargaining chip of the person *wanting* or *needing* to get rid of it (much cheaper that way).

I say you approach her and initiate a casual conversation about the car. Ask her what she hopes to do, AND steer her into the subject of how possible she thinks restoring it will be... Play devil's advocate at this point--and just point out any flaws or negatives in her plan for it.

Calipers will most likely be seized...master and slave cylinder possibly...

Geez....I'd go: ''Tell you what, I take the car and you give me 500$ for the trouble. ''

If she says no then tell her to call you back when she changes her mind in a year or 2 when shes tired of seeing it lying there...

Everyone's mentioned the cost of repair and things that might be wrong with the car. You might also want to consider what your time is worth. While I've purchased many used cars in my years I've never purchased one thats been sedentary for so many years.

I bought one years ago that sat for about 4-5 years... I pulled the cats off of it and it started right up... I think the transmission was bad though... I couldnt get it to go into gear w/o dying... I traded it for a running car and it has been sitting in the middle of no where ever since... Kinda sad...

uhm... Its beenm sitting for 5 years but hasnt been driven for 11 ?!?!?!?
I'm a little confused on that one there....

I paid $400 for mine thinking it had a blown motor and it had been in a little front end collision. But that is here in Iowa so...
FTR: it just needed a set of plugs and a battery, fender and bumper (put a body kit on it)
