how much should this cost?
my uncle was trying to sell his 87 TII, but he also offered to give it to me. we sent it to a mechanic and there were numerous problems, and the quote seemed rather steep... how much should these repairs cost? these are the prices quoted by the mechanic
1) fuel injectors $830
2) rail strip (or something, didnt really hear) $350
3) oil leak $855
oil meter repair
filter/hoses
oil level sensor
for a total of about $2035 to get the car in good working condition. however, there are like 187,000 miles on the car, so an engine/turbo rebuild cant be too far in the future.. about how much should those cost? the mechanic quoted them at around $3500 for an engine rebuild and $2000 for a new turbo. those both seem really steep. am i getting ripped off? should i take the car? (hes offering to give me the car for free, but i'll have to pay for the repairs) any opinions would be greatly appreciated

the mechanic is smoking crack that is wayyyy to much for those repairs. Are you able to do some of the repairs yourself.where is the oil leak. Are all the injectors bad.

yeah smoking too much crack man. is that in USD? Man injectors are cake, replacing the fuel injector rail is cake as well. filter hoses. thats insane man.. save all that to eventually buy a complete rebuild kit.
just my advice.

well, i live in the SF bay area, and my uncle lives in palos verdes, like 400 miles away. i was supposed to fly down there this weekend and drive the car back up, but with leaky fuel injectors, that would be pretty hard. and that 'rail strip' was actually a 'rear strut', my mom was writing down everything and she had no idea what that was until i talked to him myself. so i figure i could change that when i put in new shocks or something, so i wouldnt really need to do that. but about the oil and stuff, im not really sure how to fix everything, because ive never really worked on a car before (this would be my first car). how much should a new engine or engine rebuild cost anyways? i thought $3500 was a tad steep.. and i thought $2000 for a turbo was also pretty pricey..

Here's proof...
If you can contact Victoria British, you can get fuel injectors for $75 each, if you needed to.  In actuality, fuel injectors rarely go BAD.  Yes, they do clog, but the majority of them clean themselves up with a couple tankfuls of fuel injector cleaner.  If they are BAD enough to require being pulled and sent to a professional, we're talking one hour of work to remove, $30/each to be cleaner (times 4), and one more hour to put everything back.  That's a $300 job at the MOST.
Oil leak?  Depends where, but typically it's the oil pan gasket.  If it is the oil pan gasket, we're talking one hour to remove the oil pan, $30 for the gasket, and another hour to put everything back - these guys DO have a vehicle lift, right?  That's a $250 job TOPS.  If it's the front oil seal, it's a one hour remove and replace job - $100 TOPS.  Rear oil seal - now this is the tricky one, as it required pulling the trans - most shops charge a set labor for pulling the trans (usually 4 hours), so we're talking a $10 seal and about $300 of labor work - $350 TOPS.  Anything else would be relatively minor ($100 TOPS for labor and parts) or REALLY MAJOR (i.e. broken dowel or dowel o-ring bad) which would necessitate a complete engine TEARDOWN to fix - $2000 job for most places.
Oil meter repair - don't know exactly what you mean by this, but a rubber o-ring and/or copper crush washer replace is about $50 in parts to fix a leaking OMP.
Hoses - $100 max using genuine Mazda hoses.
Filter - air filter, $50 part and half an hour of labor - $100; oil filter, standard $50 most places for oil, oil filter, and labor.
Oil level sensor - $100 part, 1 hour of labor - $200 job TOPS.
This is what *I* would charge of this job came to me...

yeah, somethings weird with this.. i dont know exactly about the fuel injectors, but my uncle said something about leaky fuel injectors, which might cause an engine fire or something.. i dont really know.. im also not sure about the oil leaks, but apparently we need an oil filter flange or something, oil filter sensor, and the oil metering pump or whatever is messed up.. the oil leak might be in the rear because i think i remember my uncle saying something about getting near the transmission... but those repairs just need to be enough for the 6 or 7 hour drive back from LA to SF... i kind of want to start working on cars, and i figure this would be a good car to learn on.. it being "free" and all. my main question to you guys is, should i take the car, or is it not worth the hassle? thanks...

If you have the time, and the money do it. If you just need a ride.... get a ride first then take the car, spend your free time working on the RX and drive your 1980 honda civic with 300k miles on it to get to school/work. nothing worse than rushing a repair job cause you have to have wheels. Get somthing cheap/ugly/ & reliable and enjoy fixing up your RX as a reward in the mean time ... hell its FREE!
