You do! (as long as your current system is empty) Or you can break the law and empty it yourself....

I did this and it came top a cost of around $60...
First you will need to get a new drier...
then get one of those conversion kits from walmart or where you want...remove the pump from the car and drain all the oil out of it (you will need to turn the pump a little back and forth)...then fill the pump up with the recomended amount of oil that comes with the kit--also put some oil into the drier...put the pump and new drier back on the car...bring the car to a place that can perform a vacuum on the system to remove all the contaminates...then give them the cans of R134a and have them charge it for you...Now you should be enjoying the benifies of cool AC--it doesn't cool as well as R12 but its much cheaper!!!
If you have someone else do it for you then it could cost more!

as long as you can turn a wrench and follow instructions well, I think you should be able to do the parts I said you could do!! The compressor (pump) is easy to remove and so is the drier...The drier is located under the plastic air deflector under the radiator overflow bottle!! Also remember to get new O-rings made for R134a for the compressor- the drier should come with its own set! I had a hard time finding O-rings for the compressor side...the dealer should have some!!

I know that Advanced Auto Parts carry them...they will probably have to order one though...Make SURE you get the drier for a Turbo II even if you don't have one(it needs to have the brakets on the side of it to bolt to the car--the other one doesn't have one)...for some reason they have the wrong info for the N/A models!
Advanced Auto Parts should have them for about $30
NAPA may also have one but it is a bit more
Also you could get it from the dealer but it is also a bit more!

a regular drier will work as long as you put the new R134a oil into it...

I'm doing this myself now and I want to clarify something about the drier that I discovered. You don't have to ask for turbo, because the Advance Auto here had the same part for both. (33403) That is the one without the bracket.
Instead, make sure you ask for dealer installed. This was the difference at 3 different places I tried while getting prices. The part number for the one with the bracket is 33487. This is the one you want. It's about $10 more than the other one. The places I checked were from $28 to $45 on this. Autozone being the cheapest.
