How much oil?

So RX-7s burn gas, that's cool, so that means we need to fill up on our oil regularly, check the oil level and fill when needed, but here's the thing, how often should I fill? How often should I check? About how much oil does it burn?

Per the RX-8 factory manual you should check your oil every fillup, you should add enough so that your dipstick reads full when the car is running.

In normal usage the RX-7 should burn a maximum of about 1 quart every thousand miles. However, on trips to the track , or where you otherwise have lots of load at 8000 rpm, you should expect to have to have to add slightly more oil - you should check it whenever you come into the pits or any turn starts triggering the low oil alarm.

Yeah, oil consumption is expected 'cause the engine has an oil metering pump and 4 oil injectors.
But, a wimpy driving style won't use as much oil as someone with a lead foot.

Low or no oil consumption could be a failed metering pump or clogged oil injectors which will lead to engine wear and engine death.

Yeah, good call on that... Check when the engine isn't running.

When you check when the engine is running oil is in the engine and filter, so it will read lower than the dipstick is designed to show.

Though, unless you have excessive blowby or other oil problems, getting the oil to a level nicely between the marks running or not should not overfill the oil pan or result in any overfilling problems.

And you should be checking vital fluids, belts and hoses every time you fill up.
