The amount of cash is dwarfed by the amount of time spent.
I now consider junkyarding to be an aerobic exercise.

I try not to think TO much about how much I spend on my car. Every once in a while you wake up and go wtf is wrong with me? I get that atleast once or twice a week. It especially sucks when your money goes into a car that often bites you in the ***. I haven't driven my car in 7 or so months. The build is still commencing.

It goes beyond these prices, shipping and the all fameous duty tax that canadians get raped on. Some of the prices are off the top of my head.

1987 T2. $5000. Purchased bone stock with 134k km's, and rebuild at 124k km's.

Performance:
Racing Beat Rev T2 Exhaust. $900
BNR stage 2 hybrid. $500
Greddy FMIC. $700
Koyo Rad. $300
Rtek 2.1 ecu. $500
Tungsten T3 Palm. $100
Apexi spec ii bov. $150
RC Engineering Injectors, 750cc, 1000cc. $450
Walbro. $80
$3680

Visual:
ShineAuto Aero body kit. $900
S5 tails. $200
S5 mouldings. $75
S5 Mirrors. $75
$1250

Footwork, suspension:
Mazdaspeed MS01 Wheels. $1000. Refinishing $700. Total $1700
Falken 452, four 225/45R17. $600
Falken 452, two 245/40R17. $300
Tein Super Street Coiilovers w/ pillowball upper mounts. $1000
Cusco rear strut bar. $150
$3750

Electronics:
Greddy profec b spec ii. $200
Defi blue racer boost gauge. $200
PLX wideband. $250
$650

Interior:
RX8 Shift ****. $100
Momo race steering wheel. $150
Momo hub. $100
Kenwood head unit. $300
Din panel. $100
$750

Misc:
Optima red top battery. $200
NGK spark plugs. $75
Ceramic coated intake manifolds. $200
Fuel pulsation damper. $75
Mazdaspeed oil cap. $40
Oil injectors. $100
New calipers. $400
Corksport short shifter. This one I really cant remember. $200
Corksport SS brake lines. $100
Gaskets, estimated. $100
$1490

Total: $16570.
My chest just sunk when I typed that total. Wow. I could be in a 3rd gen. Including all the shipping and bs round that up to $17k+ atleast.

Yet more to come, within the next couple months... Microtech, act flywheel and clutch, new hydraulics, and a dyno tune. Still have yet to install the body kit, and get the car resprayed black. Estimating all this done at $5k.

Worth bumping this one up...

Just did some quick math on mine:

Chassis: 1250
Struts/Springs: 500
Brakes (pads/rotors/lines): 650
Bushings: 400
Custom Rear: 750
Engine: 3500
Transmission: 2000
Clutch: 500
Driveshaft: 250
Harness: 250
ECM (with tuning software): 1250
Gauges: 1000
Cooling system: 800
Fuel system: 1250
Interior bits: 500
Wideband: 250
Turbo + kit + coatings: 4500
Wheels + tires: 1200

That's $20,800, and I do (almost) all my own labor.

That's just the big ****. There is a few grand in other small things, at least. Not to mention the previous 3 transmissions and 5 engines I've played with in the car over the past couple years. Ouch. Car still needs a bit of paint work, a better clutch and probably 2-3k in other details. Jeebus.

Better make sure the wife doesn't see this...

-rust-free S4 n/a base with blown engine: $500

-good condition S5 n/a shortblock + UIM: $705 shipped

-S5 n/a flywheel, LIM, BAC, fuel rails, some other small stuff: $179 shipped

-flywheel resurfacing: $30

-Gaskets from Mazdatrix: $73 (that $40 LIM-to-engine gasket is a killer )

So that's $1487 in hard parts so far. With all the various little stuff (cleaners, chemicals, supplies) I'd say it's at a solid $1600 by now , still have a few (several?) hundred to go before it's ready

'big ticket' items still to come:
-clutch
-engine/trans mounts
-Oil pan brace
-2 summit RPM switches + electric air pump for VDI and 6pi actuation
-Possibly a full round of brake master cylinder and clutch master+slave cylinders

little stuff, such as:
-OMP/ACV/sub-zero block off
-fluids (trans, coolant, brake fluid, plan on hitting the rear end as well)
-Engine bay paint+prep products
-Probably some more sand blasting
-Still researching zinc plating for brackets and bolts and stuff
-Wire looming supplies

Then I'll have to come up with some kind of decent suspension...

sigh...

Looking at some of the $15-20k+ build sheets makes me feel a little better, though

And the other rust-mobile probably has around $2k wrapped up in it over the space of 2 years.

OMP=700

And in a week, on april 19th...

Engine overhaul and porting + transmission overhaul = $5500

Yes, you could be in an FD...but why switch, when you're the owner of the world's only six-tired, two intake-manifolded FC?

haha. The fd will always be sexier in my eyes. To late now!

The list has already grown since I wrote my list.

1987 Turbo II. Paid $600 for the car with no motor, radiator, maf, engine harness, etc. The car already has brand new tires on factory slicers and KYB AGX struts all the way around. When it's all said and done I'll have roughly $2000-$2500 in parts when it's done. That's including the clutch kit, flywheel resurfaced, injectors cleaned, full exhaust, rebuilt 13BT with mild streetport, radiator, maf, engine harness, turbo manifold, misc hoses, block off plates, Mazdaspeed motor and trans mounts, Tanabe GF210 springs, short throw shifter, FCD, boost gauge. Probably forgot a few but that's about it. Just can't wait to get the motor put together and get it fired up.

Well this a tough one without making a spec sheet & off the top of my head I would say somewhere between 25 & 28k from the start to now on my blue 7. The car I originally got for 5k, 1986 GXL that only had 60k on the car & the rest just kept adding. LOL one of my other RX7's so far only 4k.

Ok, lets see....
I paid 3k for the car, but it was totally track prepped and had tons of work done to it. It also had a bad engine and I was a newb and didn't know it. So then I spend 4k on a new engine because I didn't know any better. That lasted for a few years before it died (freak catastrophic oil seal failure). I rebuild that myself and more than offset the cast by parting out a wrecked RX7 I bought for cheap. When that finally gave up last month I decided on a full j-spec turbo swap.
J-spec engine, tranny, diff, chromoly flywheel, exedy stage 1 clutch, haltech E6X, etc, etc.
I stopped counting a 4k, its probably edging towards 5k now. And its not even running right thanks to a wiring harness botched by the person I bought it from. I have plans on a upgraded turbo and meth injection so add another 1500 or so for that in the near future.

I would say with everything I've done to it including the car I've got 14k or so invested in it. And I just died a little when I typed that.... Thankfully a lot of the early stuff was funded by my parents and payed back in endless tech support and building projects.

Talking

I built a car or 2 (not RX) and got tired of being broke all the time.

So I let one of YOU freaks BUILD the RX and I bought it!! hahahahaha!!!

90 GTUs $4700
safc: $125
cdi ignition: $150
PLX: $250
Cooling (coming soon): est $300

so I'm at a bit over $5500 not incl. maint, but including the car!

And I have a RELIABLE STRONG RUNNING GTUs with fresh motor, a/c, suspension, fresh tires, nice paint, etc etc etc

Sorry but I had to brag a bit. Now watch, it'll get hit by a meteor or something to even out the karma field

Honestly though, this is the way to do it. Figure out what you want and look for someone selling it! then do a few small mods to make it 'yours'

cheers all.

i feel pretty lucky after reading the previous posts...
1987 turbo 2 COMPLETE with under 10k on rebuild- $1000
Battery $80
Kirker Single Stage Urethane paint $67 shipped

I still have to get a headlight bulb, one door trim piece, radio surround, alternator belt and some odds and ends, but overall I got a steal...Its currently inspected and runs great just as she is for less than 1200...people compliment the car all the time.

I think the key is waiting for the right deal. I had 4 different (crusty) rx7's in a 3 year period before I waited about 4 years to find this gem. Oh and when you see it on Craigslist, get in your car, go to the ATM, and head to they guys house ASAP at about 120mph to make sure someone else doesn't get there first... I LOVE MY RX7
