Arrow how much of a difference will a presilencer make?...

On my 91 NA the exhaust is 3 inch from the motor straight to dual apexi N1's, i love it but its a little too loud for my family and neighbors, would a 3 inch presilencer make a good difference? or is there anything else i could do to make my exhaust a little quieter (without replacing mufflers)?...

it will make a significant difference in noise, you can get a 3" one from RB for quite the price or i would suggest going to www.jegs.com and buying the dynomax ultaflow 3" in/out muffler which works great as a pre silencer, it is packed with SS mesh so it wont burn out like fibreglass ones.

if its not packed with stainless steel, it will burn out after about a week.

you cant use the spiral flow mufflers, because the heat from the rotary exhaust melts the welds, unless you use them at the very back of the exhaust and have one on each side and at least 3"

I'm going to try to get a sound/video clip of my car. I've got a 3" DP, RB Presilenser, then it Y's back into two magnaflows (2.5" in, 4" tips i believe). It sounds REALLY good and is not really really loud at idle or when just cruising down the highway, but when it gets some throttle, you can tell

i have a 3" turboback to an N1 style single. it makes babies cry.

i need an RB resonator bad, i heard that you can even run exhaust off of the resonator and it'll keep the same smooth tone, just louder

Yeah, the RB presilencer does keep it nice and smooth. I think that you could probably use a magnaflow muffler as a presilencer, just cut off the tip on one of the race versions (3" in, 3" out and 4" tip) and have it welded in. My mufflers seemed to have a VERY similar construct as the presilencer.

I didn't read the whole thread but I'll chime in my info.

I'm running a stock manifold, 2.5" catback with a bonez cat, and magnaflow mufflers with a 3" pre-silencer.

I've heard a FC w/o a pre-silencer and magnaflows.... the pre-silencers make a HUGE difference.

Everybody says magnaflows sound like **** on the 7... but with the pre-silencer, it stays very low toned, not raspy at all.

Wish I had some sound clips... soon.

Um I had a Thrush glasspack on my n/a for over 6 months with no problems. Was probably louder than the day I bought it, but they are only $20. BTW it made a noticable difference.

when i had my exhaust custom made it was very very mild at idle, at WOT it was very noticeable, but not loud. i used a 2.75" pre silencer that is SS with fibreglass inside. it was nice and agressive for about a week, then the FB burnt out and it was louder than hell. the pre-silencer will make a big difference as long as it stays in tact, hence why i say to get one with SS packed in it. the dynomax ultraflow may be almost 100$, but its cheaper than anything youre gonna find. the RB pre silencer is $155 new for turbo, and over 220$ for a 3" version. no one else makes pre silencers specifically for the FC that i know of. so its going to be your cheapest, and best bet.

now if you want to do a little work and have access to a welder and cutting torch, do what im doing. the 2.75" pre silencer with FB in it that i put on mine when it was new, im gonna cut it open and pack it full of SS wool, then weld it back shut. you can buy a cherry bomb from check for like 15$ and do that if you want to do the work

i already have a pre silencer to put SS wool in, i was saying you could get a cherry bomb from checker in 3" and cut it open and put SS wool as well. get some of the SS wool from wal mart in the cleaning isle, pack it in there and viola!
