How much diff fluid do i need?
I've got an 87 GXL and I'm going to change my tranny and diff fluid but I have to special order redline fluids around here, so in order to keep myself from being stranded for 2 weeks cause of my stupidity I was wondering how much i need to order for my diff. My search told me what fluids and how much for the tranny, but nothing about how much the diff takes. And this may sound stupid, but how can I tell when the diff is full; I dont like the idea of putting to much in and having the thing explode while i'm driving. thanks for the info
There's two plugs. One is a fill/ check plug and one is a drain plug. Take the fill/ check plug out and put the oil pan under your car. Take out the drain plug and drain the fluid. Put back the drain plug and squeeze the diff fluid into the differential until fluid overflows from the plug entrance. There's no way you can overfill if you just let it run out until it's level inside the differential. Just make sure there is enough and that it's not coming out anymore. This technique and instructions also work for the transmission.

I just finished my diff. fluid change and let me give you a few tips now that the process is fresh.
- Remove the filler plug COMPLETELY. Don't just loosen it and drain because that stupid metal tag that's on there can cause some problems. I ditched mine and used a little rtv around the perimeter of the plug and it hasn't spilled a drop so far.
- Find a good tool to fill it. Squeezing the bottle won't work too well after the frist half, so I used this:

It's just a spray top off an old wheel cleaner bottle. The zip tie is key because it prevents leaks around the nozzle. I also kept the bottles in nice hot water until I used them to thin it out and it took less then ten minutes to fill the diff. and I didn't spill a drop.

something that is easier, but takes a lot longer is; i took a simple rubber hose, i took i ran into the diff and tranny and just poured the fluid into it. it was simple and worked well.
but the one above is much better then what i had. prolbey quicker too

I had one, but I crucified it to my garage wall with a screwdriver after it popped off the bottle and I got Royal Purple gear oil all over my face while doing my tranny.
