Depends on your tires. The MAX amount of pressure should be labled on the side of your tires.

for taking tight corners on 225-50-R15's, what sort of tire pressure is optimal?? the max on the sidewall is 45, but when i do that, i skid like a bitch.

There was a recent article (R&T?) that said 32psi is really spot on. It sounds trite, but it's really close to optimal. Increase for autocross, decrease for drag. Also, the max psi increases with heat so do not fill to max when cold.

For tires where the max is 35 psi, put it at 32. If it says 44 psi or up, put it at 35 psi.

The reason for this is that when you drive around, the temperature in the tires increases and the tires expand, creating more pressure. You can get a couple psi more from hot tires.

You dont want to overinflate, you end up with tires that wear too fast on the center. If you underinflate, the tires wear more on the sides.

For drag racing, I have been told to lower the pressure, but in that same Road and Track, they had adverse effects from 20-25 psi in the tires (for street tires that is)

Hope that helps

Chris

TIRE PRESSURE

Check your door jam for manufacture recommendation, mine states 32 psi, even though my tires max pressure is 35 psi.

You need to do some experimentation. The optimum pressure will be different front and rear. For autocrossing on street tires (Bridgestone RE71) I run about 40 front and 30 rear. I say "about" because it's different for different surfaces and temps. An easy way to tell is to mark your tires with chalk from 1" on the tread to 1" on your sidewall at 3 points on the tire. Then you can see exactly where you take off the chalk. If you're not getting it worn off to the edge of the tread you need a little less air. If you're wearing it off onto the sidewall you need more.

The last 2 replies are probably the best advice (not sayign the rest arent )

The door of the car states the recomended air for a car.

But the method BhamBill gave is a good one, you want to make sure your tires are gettign worn evenly.

I work installign tires, and we put 32lbs in all passenger cars cus its probably the best all arround.

Also About that Max on the side of the tire, That is the actual max "when cold" as is stated on all tires. Meaning it is safe to put the max in the tire when cold even though it might go a few pounds higher when hot.

I'm not an expert on this I'm just going by what all tires state.
