How many of you ACTUALLY want a 3rd gen?
Yo,
Of course I /want/ one. Right after I win the lotto and I can burn money like it's nothing. But since that isn't the case, no, I don't want one.
Yes, it's the sexiest shape ever to come out of Japan.
Yes, it's faster than ****.
Yes, it handles like a racecar.
And No, I still don't want to own one. The FD is the epitome of the term "Money Pit" and I ain't gonna throw my money down that hole.
I love the NA Rotary. That's why I bought the baddest one Mazda ever offered. I would buy a GSL-SE WAY before I would make the mistake of getting an FD. I talked with a guy who bought an FD /new/ and he said he had 20-30K into it, /in addition/ to the 40K purchase price. No way, no day.

Yes the FD is superior as in motor wise and suspension--in stock form.
If you guys have ever worked on an FD, you will NOT get one. I prefer my FC any day. The quality is shabby on the FD and if all the gremlins haven't been found, you will encounter a lot more problems.
The FC is better in balanced and fitment compared to an FD. Of course the FD has a more updated look and looks more refined, but the quality is not that good. Mazda could've done a better job on the RX7 .The '86 and '87TII were probably the best RX7 sellers in the US then the '93 but after that all sales dropped off significantly and eventually killed the RX7 shipments to the US. In Japan it's a different story. RX7 followers and quality -- QUALITY-- speed shops are everywhere and are the more feared cars on the streets and tracks. They are respected. In the US there's a handful -MAYBE- that will do quality work. Those who work on their own cars, will agree that the FC is better made, easier to work on
and is better balanced. You ever seen the vacuum diagram on an FD?

well im torn
i have an 88TII and i literally love the car. i like the styling, handling, ease of maintanence and power. i cant even imagine me selling or parting with her.
but im a lucky guy though because my father has a 93 Rx7 TT. he just got a new motor w/street port. i get to drive the beast, hehe.
my scoop on both
88TII is a well balanced car, good overall power. perfect for newbies to the turbo scene.
93TT is a BEAST!!!! i agree its put together like crap. the interior is a bunch of plastic crap that breaks everywhere. ***** broken here, door handle broken over there. very crappy! but in perfomance it has everything a TII owner wants, lots of low end power, tons of power up high. its a little to scary though. my TII is much more easy to drive.

IMO Fc's have a timeless look, and FD's dont. Plus I can jam on my car/ motor, and not worry cuz a new J spec is only 1K$, blowing a motor in a 3rd gen would be financially trajic for me. I wouldnt trade my modified FC for a stock FD ever.
ummm i have a FD and a FC. soon to be two FC's supposed to pick up an 89 T2 friday night. truthfully my FD ownership has been horrible. i am murphy's law. nothing has ever gone right with my FD..... my FC's had some problems but i got them working
none of my rx7's have NEVER left me stranded
also my FD is a money pit

Truer words were never spoken.
A friend of mine bought an R1 (and got a sweet deal on it) new back in 94 and purchased the extended warrenty. Good thing, using it as a daily driver, he estimates that they have made over $15k in repairs, and thats keeping it all stock.
No kidding, he actually has the car in the shop at least twice a month for something. Now that his extended warrenty is about to expire, and he doesn't do much engine work himself, he doesn't know if he can afford to keep it.
A while back he asked me how much I spent on repairs on my Turbo II daily driver over the past 2 years (not including tires). I said, "Well I've been upgrading my car over the last two years, so it has been kinda pricey. With new injectors, clutch, downpipe, yada yada, I think I've spent around a thousand." He replied with "!@#$! thats about what the work on my R1 costs every two months!"
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to own an FD. Its just that with the pice of parts for them, and the fact that they have such a tight engine compartment (making working on them difficult) I think I'm going to stick with my Turbo II.
Besides, have any of you ridden in one on a long trip? Forget it! They are a true sports car, snug as can be. I'm 6 foot tall, and an hour is about all I can take before I need a 20 minute stretching break. With the 1st and 2nd gens, you can take them on the track, or you can take them on a long drive. They are snug without being too confining.
But still, if I had money to burn......

I want one. However, I have put so much time into my 2nd gens and know them so well. The attraction to staying a 2nd gen guy is very strong. But if the right 3rd gen came up. I would probally sell my 86 and 91. SHHHHHH.....Don't let Wankel7 and RotaryR hear that!

I love 3rd Gens, owning one is not a huge priority of mine. I like driving my sports cars as opposed to fixing them all the time. A 3rd Gen can be made reliable, but I prefer the looks and ease of maintanence of a TII. However, in a few years when I get a "real" job I could see myself buying a nice mint example of a FD...but I think I'll end up getting a Porsche 930 in Guards Red.
I would take a heavily modded TII over a equally modded FD any day. FC are more rare to find in good shape, FC's are better sleepers, and damn it, I just love my FC. I will, however , eventually own all three generations, though.
While the FD is, to me, the single most lovely automobile shape ever mass produced, the quality issues that killed it for America cannot be ignored. That's why my To Do List has "building a sweet reliable hot-rod 3rd gen up from a wrecked shell" down at the bottom, below "buying a brand-new RX-8" which isn't likely too soon. In the meantime, I love the daily driver comfort and NA torque of my GTU.

FD can be made reliable. I dont have any price quotes but I do know that Sport Compact Car mag started a FD project back in '98. Their goal was to make the FD more reliable and fast as hell! To this day the writers say its one of the fastest damn cars they have driven. My choice is the FD, first. Im on the verge of making enough money to pay for it. Though my dream is to own all three generations. That though just makes me giddy. I have yet to decide which model of the the first and second gen to invest in, you all seem to agree that the TII is a good buy, but what about the GLE-SE. Peace, Sphinx.
I have a FC, and FD, I perfer to drive the FC, its just more fun, and I love how it looks, but I did use the FD as a daily driver for over a year, and I am now, since my FC is offline at the moment, I put about 8000miles/year on the FD, and haven't had much problems at all.. (2-3 years now) maybe I'm just lucky.. I do perfer the FC though, I started with a NA FC, bought a FD, a year later bought the TurboII cuz I missed the first one.
The thing I really hate about the FC are the owners that are such cheapasses, bugs me all the time.. but oh well. I agree with j9fd3s though, there are a lot of dumb FD owners. =p More so than FCs..

yah, getting some people to spend money on their cars is like squeezing water out of a rock. Either that or they spend waaaaay too much money on them.
FC anyday
After the dumbass Ford Ranger hit my 91 GXL, everyone and thier dog tried to convice me to get a different car. But i didn't want to (personally, i think they just didn't want my car to be faster than theirs). But I have a love for FC's. I now have a 90 GTU that needs a new motor, probably doing a swap from the GXL. The FC is what brought me to like cars (I used to hate them). Then i got my GXL, my first car, and i plan on being a FC owner for a long time. I dunno what it is, but i LOVE them.
Quirky, tiny, old, broken demister grills, hard to find parts here in America, but damn, I love the FC! I maight get a FD someday, when I am old and stupid. But for now, FC baby! Now, to find the $$ for a 20B swap....

If I were in Japan, I'd be driving an FD because of the loyalty and love the shops have for them and the parts that are readily available. The FCs have a loyal backing as well as the FDs. I agree that the FDs motor and suspension is superior to the FC but that's far as it goes. The FC motor cannot even touch an FD motor in terms of power output because of the HUGE ports and strenghthening they have done to the 13BREW. Don't get me wrong. I'd rather have an FC but if you want power and don't care about reliabilty , the FD is for you. If you were in Japan, an FD would be a better choice because of the parts available and shops that know their ****. Both are BAD *** cars in Japan. The most popular cars are the 180SX (Sylvia), FD, FC, Skylines, not in that order. When I went to FEED in Osaka, you would not believe the parts that are readily available and the enthusiasm the workers have. Another thing is the shops are CLEAN! Most shops are. They don't look down on ANY RX7. Here they do. The drivers and shops are alike. The FD owners are frickin high nosed SOBs. I don't know what makes them think they are better. Here where I live, all we have a are a bunch of loud *** lawn mowers (Honda, Acura). FCs are a dying breed. I thought about buying an FD but after working on a friends FD, I changed my mind real quick.
All you RX7 owners, be good to your fellow owners.

I would take an FD, but not to give up my FC. The FC is easier to work on, and has cheaper parts for going fast. The FD has better looks and better body kits for a more reasonable price. All in all. I'll take my FC to race and an FD to drive...FC = go; FD = show. That's that.
