I get heat from the heater before I get out of the neighborhood, less than a half.

I get 160* in about 2 miles and 180* in about 4-5 total miles.

it depends on your ambient temperature, and other things such as ignition timing and fuel your engine uses during warmup.

For me, 70f+ days, it only takes 4 minutes to reach 180F. Below 40F, it takes 10-15 minutes.

alriught, cuz my car takes like like almost ten minutes to reach like 160, and then a real while to get any higher.. you think it's because of the koyorad? also, it rarely goes lower than 65* in long beach where i live

do you have an electric fan? is your thermostat working correctly?
Where are you getting your temperature reading from?

Why are you making TWO threads that are about the same subject?

why are YOU complaining about something that does not concern you? goodness -___- forum junkies like you make me sad for the human race.. just be the f*ck quiet. your post takes up just as much space as my thread queerbait.

hah well alright.. the first one was about a bunch of different things.. this one was simply a starter thread for people like me who tried to "search" but didn't find anything useful because of all the "how will 18x7+75 wheels fit" kinda threads. i was simply trying to start a thread where people can look to see how our engines react heat wise to the different climates/temps we all live in.

i didn't know you own the rights to rx7club.com. sorry if you got your(obviously wayyy too tight) panties in a MAJOR ball/weenie squeezing bunch. was only trying to help me+others with the same problem.

Stopped and just idling, i usually see 180f in about 5 to 7 minutes when its 70ish outside. Getting the temp signal from the thermostat housing.

Sad to say it, but he was right. You're going to end up asking the same questions in this thread that you did in the other one.

Two things:

-This question is too vague to elicit any meaningful data, a comparison is not possible. You'd need to know such things as radiator type (stock/not), coolant mix, fan type (stock/efan), the list goes on.

-If your car is running well, why do you even care what an "internet norm" is?
I've put over 60k miles on an engine whose specs would indicate it should be dead, yet it runs flawlessly.

Every car of our vintage has by now developed a distinct "personality" and you need to learn and be comfortable with it.
If your car likes to take an extra five minutes to warm up, so what...it's twenty years old, cut it some slack.
Besides, even when brand new there had to be a range of "acceptable" variance from car to car. Ask this question twenty years ago and the response would be as garbled and irrelevant as it is today.

You disgust me! You ask for help and you treat forum members like this?? Usually people that have been on this forum as long as styx are people that will give you the best help. You want help? try a little respect! Jackass!!

What is the state of your thermostat? Is it OEM? Is it more than a couple of years old? In neither thread did you answer that question. If you cannot answer this question, you should put the thread on hold till you know.

The coolant thermostat has everything to to with the temperature your car runs in cool weather.

as some have said, how long it takes depends on a few things, especially outside temp.

my stock S5 vert, new thermostat, stock everything. takes about 7-8 minutes to warm up in stop and go traffic when its over 60 degrees outside. it warms up a little quicker if i hit red lights vs getting all greens.

i'd say if it was taking longer than 15 minutes, something is wrong.

as an addendum, the P port takes longer to warm up if its just idling, so it might be that misfires/rich mixture will keep the engine cooler longer

I have a koyorad and my car takes almost 10 min to reach 160 and rarely goes above. I even removed the fan shroud on a belt operated fan and it does the same thing lol. I also run without a thermostat though, so disconnect that up pipe fill point and check in between their and the engine to see if you have one

I've been advised against that. Even if your water temp is reading 160, without a thermostat the actual engine temps may be higher.

Basically, with free flowing circulation (aka no thermostat), the coolant doesn't have the chance to "soak up" that heat quite as well.

Well, IDK about that to be honest. After I removed the thermostat I stopped having over pressure and over heating problems. At first when I bought my RX7 in 2004 I had overheating and coolant problems plague my vehicle. But after taking the thermostat out and reinforcing a few of the block offs on the upper plenum it stopped completely. Then I installed that Koyo radiator and it's been sensational sense. I haven't had cooling problems in over 5 years now.

Yea I've heard people having really good results with koyo's, I should probably pick one up myself.
Just wondering tho, was it an OEM thermostat? Maybe you had a defective one?

I went through 3 before I did it. To be honest the heating problems made me feel like my car was cursed. Maybe it's superstition but I have left it out ever since =D

When the outside temp is around freezing, mine takes about 4-7 miles to get to normal temp, but my heater works by mile 3-4.

On a normal feb day in NC(like today) where its around 45-50* ambient the car sitting in the garage just idling takes ~8-10 minutes to hit operating temp, which for this car is 178*. Its a stockport s5 n/a with a cat delete pipe, catback, koyo n-flo radiator, new oem thermostat, and oem clutchfan/shroud combination.

Hey I remember you guy. Anyway I agree with clokker, some cars are just different and have their own personality.

Also some other things that were probably not mentioned:
coolant/water ratio, fan clutch got locked up, a/f ratio and timing???
