How long do I have left to live ?
I have an engine exhaust leak some where , and I smell like an engine and some resturants refuse to seat me !
Ok not that serious but still I smell like an engine and getting mild headaches , i have racingbeat exhaust i torxed down the bolts to specs ,it is a downpipe a presilencer and a Y pipe all new and chrome and all torked to specs with hi performance gaskets shot with hi temp gaskets sprayed w/ sealant setup to tacky before install ...Could it be My headers or can this be that i don't have the mufflers on yet , since they are still in shipping ?
It can't be too many more places this fume is coming from right ? Or what is a good way to check for that kinda leak , do i squirt soapy water around the headers? Or is it more a systematic approach ? I don't want to pull the engine change the header gasket just to find out it was leaking somewhere else , but I ll get the mufflers on and at least eliminate that possibility
I think i'll park it till the muffs come in , Or mount a Snorkel to the sun roof

ha ha, nice thread title ...do you still have all your insulation pieces & shifter boots down in your shifter housing? also big holes in the hatch seal or tail light assemblies could let fumes in, too.

not long at all- carbon monoxide is not easily removed from the blood- it continues a slow builup with each occurance...if you're getting headaches, the next symptom on the list is blacking out- not a good thing while driving...shortly thereafter, if no fresh air is inhaled, is death...luckily you won't feel a thing j/k...seriously, though, it is a very effective way of committing suicide if that's what you're trying to do-get it fixed, keep the windows down for fresh air till you do...

Chances are that its not a leak in the ex. system, but a leak in your trunk. The seals around the hatch and/or the taillights might be letting the fumes from the tailpipes into the cabin from the back. Also, you mentioned that you removed stuff from the trunk...so that might be a clue also.

Lmao , I do use the sunroof and only reason i am here with you now ... Although I have mild headaches not to be confused with the Giant headaches my wife gives me , I still would like to know if not having the mufflers on this car could cause a leak into the car ? With no obvious holes other than being a stock vehichle in good shape ...
I live in a small town and the mech shops here are crooks and lacking skill to help me with the basics ...
I am thinking about just pulling the engine part way and replacing the header gasket since I have the tools to hoist it and I did the engine swap myself ,
I am just lost on trouble shooting some less obvious general problems , and I don't want to go drastic on the trouble shooting , but sometimes it can be ness,. Soapy water is starting to look like a great idea to me,
although it works for finding a flat in a tire tube don't know if it works on exhaust but hey , it s a not going to cost me a dime right? Well maybe I should get better life insurance so my wife is set? You are a witness that this would be an accident and not a suicide right? :P

after you start the car, before the exhaust gets TOO hot, run your hand down near the manifold/ downpipe area to feel for leaks (actually, if it's leaking in this area, you should HEAR it), then work your way down the system under the car, feeling around all the joints in the pipes...if you don't have mufflers, then your pipes are ending at the Y-pipe? that's probably your problem right there, they need to exit at the rear of the car, not 3/4 of the way back!

Ok , what a Great Idea , DOH! why didn't I think of that = ) cuz I am HIGH on Noxiuos fumes and have done serious brain damage to be able to think ! = ) I don't think it will be a leak in the Racing beat system ,I was careful with all gaskets and took extra efforts to tighten to proper specs BUT... I am under the influence so you can never be too sure , Haha
Well I hope it is just that lack of Mufflers are causing this problem and I will remember this in the future that having a complete exhaust system is what makes for a clean smelling car ... Otherwise I will be pulling an engine and changing a header or a gasket
Thanx for the help I'll repost with what I find

That is more than likely what I am facing too.

I know this prolly sounds funny but why not kill two bird with one stone
the ATF treatment seems to work for a lot of ppl
you know soak the engine in ATF overnight
when you start he car the next morning you will find your leaks
ATF when burned leaves a nice white thick smoke that you can see comming out of any holes in the system

I find this strange.. I removed my deadening and carpet, and i even have a few holes here and there where you can see straight to the ground (The holes were there factory, just covered up with deadening). But I dont get this weird exhaust smell... I have RB header/presilencer and custom catback, but i dont believe i have any exhaust leaks anywhere.

so ignore that part of kill two birds
but it still works good for finding leaks

put it back .. theres no need to remove it .. it doesnt weigh anything ...

If your exhaust steup ends at the y-pipe, and you removed the deadening and stuff form the trunk, thats your problem. Just put on a catback. They aren'y horribly expensive, and its worth it to keep most of the exhaust gasses out of you're car. While we're on the subject, I actually found a like-new A'pex single N1 on a car in a junkyard. It was total luck, but I already had one so I didnt need it.
