How To: Installing T2 TII Wing Spoiler on your FC

first off, about the title - its worded weird because in case anyone ever does a search on this topic, there is a good chance their choice of search words will bring up this thread for their help. anyways, this will give you an idea of what goes on when mounting a Turbo II wing/spoiler on any FC. this is an S5 TII spoiler going onto an '88 GXL.
the specimen!:

the victim!:

not many people will ever need a how-to for this kind of procedure, any idiot with basic tools can do it, but it doesnt hurt to add it on here. so on we go... these are tools i used:
- drill with various drill bits
- large cardboard box cut flat to use as a guide
- ratchet and various smaller sized sockets
- the spoiler with its hardware (4 studs, 4 nuts)
- rtv or any silicone water resistant sealant
- sharpie
- file / sandpaper
- hammer
- small screwdriver
- scissors / razorblade
- 4 washers

first off take a large piece of cardboard box, i used the box that Lodivigo used to ship the wing to me. lay the cardboard flat on the floor, and lay the spoiler on it. outline the spoiler and press firmly to make 'dents' into the cardboard, where the spoiler's studs are, then drill those dents out to form holes in the cardboard, where the studs would go. trace the wing with the marker/sharpie and then cut it out:

use an old but clean shirt soaked in really hot water and clean the rear area of the car where the spoiler will be mounted, and dry it well. put your newly made cardboard spoiler 'guide' on the rear of your FC and get it as close as possible. i measured where the holes where going to be with a ruler to make sure all 4 studs were equally apart. good idea to "mount" the wing on top of the guide while its on the car, so you can see if the spoiler will be straight and if the antenae hump is in the right spot (cut a hold in the cardboard for that part of the spoiler). once you have that figured out, put the wing back on the ground and use tape to hold the guide still on the car.

once the guide is properly secured to the rear of the car, use a hammer and small phillips screwdriver and 'punch' a dent in the car's metal using the guide's holes as a ... guide. a couple taps is fine, this gives the drill something to 'grab' instead of spinning freely all over the rear of the car, severely messing up your paint. once all 4 dents are made, get the drill and start low in size with the bits, gradually moving up after all 4 stud holes are done. note that the center studs on the center of the wing are smaller in diameter than the outer studs on the sides of the wing, so the two center holes will be smaller. after each bit used, take the spoiler and mount it to see if the studs fit in snugly, if not, keep going up in size. sooner or later you'll have reached the correct diameter for both sets of studs. take off the cardboard guide and inspect the massacre you just did to your car. you better have done it right or else there's going to be some serious body work.

once the holes are drilled and finished, i rolled up a small square of sandpaper and sanded the inside of the holes. i also used a file going both ways, and inside and out to take out shavings. at this point i applied gasket sealant around the holes, on both the inside and outside of the car, so that water wouldnt seep through the holes thus leaking into the interior. this is optional. it also helps with preventing the area around the holes to rust. take spoiler insert it into the holes, making sure everything is lined up. if you did it right it will just drop in without too much hesitation. i tightened the outer side studs first, using a washer too (optional). so it was wing / stud / car / washer / nut. use the ratchet and go on in and under the interior to tighten the nuts, where the taillights are. one by one. once all 4 are done, make sure its stationary and that the wing is indead flush against the car with no gaps. slighty try to move the wing to see if theres any play, it should be pretty sturdy. if its on there good and not wobbling, then you did things right and are pretty much done. the finished product:

i can post better pics tomorrow, if needed... but you get the idea. hope this helped anyone wanting to add a spoiler to their FC.

The spoiler has no mounting brackets from the factory, correct?

Do you by any chance know the 'proper' nut\bolt sizes?

If I get the neccessary hardware in time (9 more days) the body shop painting my car will mount the spoiler for free

it's a cool thread but I can't imagine why anyone would need it. Isn't it common sense?

measure, measure again, mark, measure again, drill, tighten and it's done.
