Actually, the coupe was a model for 91's. There was coupe, convertable, and turbo.

87 or less for NA and 91+ for TII. Seriously you don't want this as your first car.....especially if you are still in HS. if you want to make the mpg a little better you can invest in an SAFC and lean it out but if you lean it out too much you'll kill the motor............

A n/a fc is a great first car to have if you are serious about learning about cars. Cause when u own an fc you pretty much have to work on it all the time so you learn alot about cars and get alot of good experience. BTW my first car was an 87 base when i was in high school....

Also ide figure that a fc would be able to out handle a 240 anyday of the week/

Also to those that have driven 240s (Fastbacks preferably) hows the handling, speed, acceleration compared to a na FC? (I cant seem to find any T2's out here).
the FC was built as a sports car.
The 240sx was in america a basic economy car.
while the 240 handels pretty good it lacks the FC's grip
the 240 has a superior turning radius, but you can fix that on the FC.

i cant really directly compare speed and acceleration.
I've never driven a NA fc or even stock TII.
the 240 feels like most cars. peppy but not fast by any means.

both cars have tons of room to grow in every way.

i see this as more of a question as to whether an FC would make a good DD and get decent gas mileage.

FC has mediocre at best gas mileage, and that can't be bumped up much even with tuning. best i would believe is 30MPG driving it like it was a geo metro with infinitely light throttle changes, it wouldn't even be fun to drive anymore.

next, the FC is a maintenance hog, since few people mentioned this i guess i will reiterate that all rotary powered cars need regular maintenance or the repair bills will go up even more if it is neglected. most piston powered cars do not need much maintenance regardless of service intervals listed, they are much more resilient than rotary powered cars.

last point is, rotaries are fun cars, period. if you can afford the time or money then they are well worth the headaches if you ask me but personally they don't seem to be a good fit for anyone on a tight budget.

yes, this has been covered before.

unless you are running advanced timing then 91 octane is a waste of money.

i get 15-17mpg on 3/4 freeway and 1/4 city. I get 250-280 mpg off of 18gal. but mine is a mildly modded turbo. mine is pretty bad i think. but if your getting a na rx-7 then i see no problem getting 19-22mpg of mixed driving, because it was like that for my old 91 na. ill jus say get a na if your worried about gas. turbo cars are gonna need lots of gas to kill. and u should be more worried about fixing the car as it is a 15-20 year old car and stuff is gonna break when bought used. Be prepared to be a mechanic or else you will spend lots of money paying others to do work for you. If you dont like reading a lot and getting your hands dirty then get the 240sx, but still i would much more prefer you a honda if thats the case.

How to get better gas mileage?

Well, swapping in a Corvette C4 rear center section to get longer gears, and then putting in a TDI would be a great way, but I doubt anyone wants to do that...

Id say get a standalone, keep your tires aligned and inflated, put on a better intake and exhaust, dont touch the ports, and drive sedately.

^ That's hillarious!

87 octane is fine, I've used it on the race track in 100+ degree F temps without issue. So yes it's ok to run 87 in your NA, I guarantee you it's not going to see a more demanding environemnt than that, unless you've done something unusual to it (advanced timing, NOS, boost) or if there's something wrong with it.

I'm on my 2nd S4 N/A daily driver. On both I got 16-18/23-26 mpg, depending how I drive it. Cost of maintenance has been negligible, at least compared to gas. Both ran great. Lost 1st one on a slippery road. My 1st one had 200k miles and looked terrible, $380 at tow auction. 2nd one is nicer.

See the FAQ on search *****.
1. There is info already out there which may also help you and you should search first.
2. Saying, "Search!" is not helpful. Direct them or search for them or give a quick answer to save them the trouble or shaddup.

I know some people cannot comprehend these 2 things. In their minds it is some kind of paradox for the 2 thoughts to co-exist.

Doesn't running it leaner increase the chance of detonation? Is there a way around this?

its not a issue at crusing (well you can run leaner than under load) speed really. I met a guy who had a renisis engine runing 20:1 for hours with no issue. (in a plane)
i run my car at 16:1
