How hot is too hot?
So it got a little warmer today ( 70 degrees ) and my buddys car was, of course, running a little hotter as well. Hes got a fan to put on and we THINK the waterpump might be going bad ( makes a bad squeal when you give it gas on startup but goes away later ). So anyways, my real question is, at what water temp should he start to worry? It was sitting a little over 190 today in really bad traffic but not much higher than that.
What temperature is "overheat". And what should the normal operating temperature be on a 70 degree day?

is there an overheat warning buzzer on our cars????, i never look at the heat gauge after the car is warmed up. i would actually like one if it is possible to rig one to go off at like 220 degrees

Stock electric fan (if you got one) trips at 220F-225F.

you could probably hook a relay into the aux fan power wire to turn on a buzzer or LED or something. I think that turns on around 210-220. but if you have A/C it would be on when ever the A/C is on...
edit: dam you ted, just had to post at the same time AND beat me to it
edit 2: never mind you didn't think about doing this, you just posted the temp
so I still win LOL

i prolly have the fan, i got the car basically stock, but i do have a/c. cant i get one of those electric fan sensors and tune it to 220 degrees, then hook that to a buzzer??

Easiest way to do this is get the Miata coolant SWITCH.  This thing trips at 207F, so it's a bit cooler than the stock switch - replace the stock switch with the Miata switch - it's the same size and screws right in.
207F is about the right temp for the electric fan to trigger...
