How hot should it get with the A/C on?

Guys,

My car ('87 TII) is running great (thanks to Carmon Colvin for
the oil cooler). The A/C has been converted to R134A
and is Ice Cold even with temps. here at about 97 deg.
I have to cycle it on an off as it gets very cold. My
engine always runs at 1/4 on the factory gauge even in
the summer but when the A/C is on the temp. goes to
1/2 or even a little over 1/2. Is this normal? If
not what could the problem be? Is there a temp.
switch on the evaporator (or whatever is inside the
car) to cut the compressor on and off?

My TII does the same thing.Only thing is that it was 107 here today. That doesn't do too much to help keep the car cool. One more thing for you to think about, and maybe you will think it's stupid.I'm 6'3", and have my seat all the way back, and reclined just about to the storage bins.I realized that when I'm in this reclined position, I'm not looking level at the guages, which means my car is actually running a little cooler than I think it is.Just something to think about.

Is there a thermostat to cycle the A/C compressor

Well....i'm 5'8" so I doubt that's my problem . Anyway...anybody know if there is a "thermostat" inside the evaporator to cylce the compressor....mine runs constantly when the A/C is on.

The expansion valve has a temp sensor to change orifice size, which changes the evaportator temp. There is also another temp switch in the evap housing. I think its to cycle the ac. The only other thing it could be is a switch to run the ac compressor with the defroster when it's warm enough out. There is an adjustement for this switch. You can access it behind the glovebox. I'd find out what it is exactly before screwing w/ it. Or do like me and turn away.

Guys,

Today my car was running about 1/4 on the fact. temp. gauge even when driving hard. Turned the A/C on and within a few minutes the temp had risen to about 3/4. I could not find any info. in the owners manual as Ted suggested. This does not seem normal to me. The temp. goes down within a couple of minutes if I turn the A/C off. Anybody know what could be wrong given that the cooling system works great if the A/C is not running. BTW the A/C seems to work fine and does not seem to put much strain on the engine...I don't believe that the extra "drag" is causing the temp. problem.
