this is all I know about it.

well i drove it out of town on the freeway fast for a long period of time. it broke down i had to get it towed home. i replaced the thermostat cap and overflow tube that had broken and i drove it to walmart 2 miles away and back, over heated and hasnt started to this day. i got it towed to RPM automotive here in alb, they told me the engine was blown, they started it and it wouldnt keep the pressure, i guess from what i understand coolant got into the engine and it was ruined.
I'm afraid I'll rebuild it, and it will overheat again

damn, I was going to go back and edit but it's been too long.
Anyway, my concern is what are the chances other parts are shot, like the housings, I don't want to spend the extra few hundred bucks for TII housings, because I'm cheap, but I guess there's really no telling until I have the engine apart?

many factors, how long did it sit would be the first one.

As far as your concern, nope, as long as its done right. By right I mean replacing hard parts that are not in spec or ruined from the overheat situation. Also, must repair the cause of the overheat in the first place.

I have no idea what caused the damn thing to overheat, but don't think it's been sitting too long. I keep hoping it overheated running at high speed because it's missing the fan shrouds, and it's just got a bad coolant seal.

he also says it doesn't start, but also that it wouldn't "keep the pressure" at the shop, which makes me think maybe it runs, a little. Unless he means during a compression test.
maybe I'm just paranoid, but I'm just trying to decide what my ultimate, least costly route is, rebuild myself using old housings and a rotaryaviation kit, and gamble that something else is wrong and it'll overheat again, or send it off to rotaryressurection, or buy a JDM engine in unknown health.

You can use a N/A housing with the diffuser cut out. You can't really tell until you rip it apart, could be just simply the coolant o-ring is too shot to hold compression and is leaking water in like a ****, or it could be pretty bad and the track could of broken off, or an apex seal got eaten. Who knows, can't tell till it's ripped apart.

I mean, these would be pretty obvious to the untrained eye though, right?
I plan to yank the engine and break it down before ordering the kit at least.
