how high should I be reving
on my 86' n/t 13b f/i 5spd with 79,xxx miles..
I am curious I heard these cars run better if revved high and hard alot.. and dont endure prolong periods of sitting time..
my question is how high should I be roaring the engine up to before shifting normally?
how high on occasion?
and if I am crusiing it is better to be in a lower gear at 3k-4k or in a higher gear at 2000-3000 rpm?
Dave

Depends how much gas you are willing to use. You use more when you shift past 3800 as thats when the secondary injectors come on. I usually shift at 3000-3500 for normal driving.
You should redline the car every once in a while. Most people do it every day. I do in both of my cars.

dont be afraid to rev every so often but in normal conditions keep it in the 3000-3500 range. Its good to rev at least a good 6000-6800 sometimes to get the nasty carbon out but remember thats just a quick fix. No matter what you drive, if you are consistently driving the **** uot of your car, its gonna take a crap on you.

Street_knight just asked about premixing and I responded to it. Check it out, it should be near the top.
I personally drove mine fairly conservatively a lot of the time, but always made sure I had enough room to do a full-throttle acceleration on the highway on-ramp. I ran mine to the rev-limmiter, but my car actually made power that high. Most cars die off before the reline so theres no point.
Also, the buzzer is a bit before redline.

.... I premix and my car feels smooth all the way up to (and sometimes past) redline... I remember my old base model... I redlined the **** out of that car almost everyday.... on the original motor... It lasted me through high school... It finally blew after me abusing it for about 3.5 years (didnt know any better, or at least I didnt want to) w/ 220K on the clock... Anyway, now sometimes when I drive my cars now, since my 7 has a lightweight flywheel it gets to redline pretty fast now... Its a good thing I have a shift light... Also, I noticed that since I started using the light weight flys, I tend to drive more in the higher rpms normally.... I think if you do all of your normal maintenance on the car and keep it healthy, then it shouldnt be much of an issue...

uhhh
no you dont.
first, staging is at 3644rpm
second, just because the secondary is firing doesnt mean it will eat more gas abnormamlly - it is a gradual increase of fuel with the rpm - why do you think cars bog when the secondaries fails to fire *gasp* because the injector cycle on the primaries are cut to ****!

is it really necessary to go all the way up to redline to reduce carbon build-up? I would think anything above 3800 would exersize the secondary injectors and reduce carbon build up. I would think redlining puts unneccessary stress on the engine and accomplishes nothing that 5000rpm wouldn't do, other than stretch your smile muscles more.
I usually shift around 2500-3000 normal driving, 5-6k having fun, and around 7k-7500 when pushing it. I have only gone to the buzzer once. I could barely hear it because my exhaust is so loud.
