How hard is it to rebuild a 13b motor using atkins rebuild kit, im want to purchase an rx-7 and restore it to pristine condition and make everything in pristine condition before i transfer my insurance over to the rx-7 i am soon to purchase. or would you recomend me sending it to some one like kevin landers, i wouldnt mind sending it to someone but how hard is it to reistall back into your car, i hear reinstally your ecu is very difficult. thanks
it isn't too difficult to either rebuild or remove/install the engine BUT you must pay attention to detail and be a patient person who can handle possibly tearing the motoro back apart if there is a problem with the rebuild.
it is simple but very time consuming process the first time.

hmmm, those look like Hurley seals... i would bet they are too!
i have used atkins seals with no issues but i have heard some very disheartening things about Atkins lately...

I had Atkins seals in my engine .... they held up great! And when they finally let go they did not destroy my housings / irons...
Granted...their old faulty exhaust porting techniques did the engine in early.
Neither did my lean condition...
Overall I would say the seals are fine.
But rebuilding your engine..
Time, money, opprotunity...do you have all three?

he said the engine was built 2 years ago, maybe they were using hurley seals back then while going through some apex seal changes? i have seen pics of Hurley seals and the failures, that metal looks even softer than atkins to wear so prematurely. as you can see the apex seal springs ate up the seals not the housings.
does atkins actually make their own seals or do they sublet the process to another company? maybe that company used to be Hurley but they did not advertise it.
i do know that current atkins seals do not cut their 'boot' to be that long in length, it more resembles an OEM 2 piece seal.

i think i would be less concerned with the products they sell aside from the camden kits, i would be more concerned with the quality of work they do and how they back their work.
if i had found that kind of damage i wouldn't put blame on the owner, i would tend to think those seals are junk... maybe have the customer pay for parts for the rebuild but not charge for a full rebuild price...

thread necromancer....
racing beat is all OEM components, you could probably get the same kit cheaper from mazdatrix or even your local dealership, if you want an all OEM kit.

I was just wondering, a few of my buddies went with the racing beat kit and didn't have to much luck with it. I just ended up going with te Atkins master rebuild kit.
if someone can't build an engine with OEM components then they certainly can't build one with aftermarket components.

Atkins seals have been measured to be softer than Mazda seals.
Atkins says that because they don't want a zillion warranty claims as idiots blow up engines with their seals. I wonder what boost pressure rating Mazda would say their seals are for, if they even made such statements?

Any seal you use won't break if the car is running right and tuned properly, but the harder seals allow a smaller margin for error before breaking and I'm not willing to take that chance.
