How hard can it be to find a master cylinder? (long)

Went to Advance Auto Parts to get a master cylinder on Tues of last week. They ordered the wrong part. My master cylinder has 2 brake lines, they gave me one that had 3. I had them reorder it. Next day they called to let me know the part came in, I went to pick it up and it was the same wrong part. So they gave me a bolt that they said I could use for a cap, and said to get some yellow teflon tape and it should work. Tried it, didn't work. Brought it back, had them order it one more time. This time had the guy show me on the computer exactly what he was ordering. Picture was correct, I said order it. A day later, same wrong part. Got my money back. Now it's Friday, I go to NAPA, 'cause even tho they're a bit of a drive from my house, at least their people usually know parts. So I ordered from them. On Monday they said the part came in, I went and picked up the part--same wrong part. So I had the guy call up his distributor and open the box to make sure that the correct part was in it before he sent it. Every box had the same wrong master cylinder. So then he goes to the remanufacturet-- A1 Cardone or something like that...says it the largest remanufacturer in the country and supplies most of the auto part stores. Talks to a tech checks their in-house inventory--they're all mis-boxed with the same wrong part. He checks his other warehouses..same issue. After a day or 2 of looking, says he can remanufacture a core and get me the part next day. That was yesterday. Today I call NAPA, they haven't got the part yet. He calls A1 Cardone and the tech says he doesn't have a core and will have to wait at least a few days to get a core in(I gave my core to Advance Auto Parts last week). He said the only other option is to cap it. I told him that's what I tried last week. He suggested fittings specifically made to cap those types of lines. He had half of what I needed, got the other part of the fitting from a different NAPA. Just put the master cylinder in. Cap seems to be holding. It took 2 weeks to replace this master cylinder.

My car is an 88 TII with ABS. Only has 2 brake lines off the master cylinder. If you have a car like this and need a master cylinder, hope the above helps you, and you don't waste as much time as I did.

if you went to the dealership, you would have gotten the correct part for $65.

If you want to just plug a line, you'd need an adapter from M10-1.0 IF to 3/8"-24 IF, then a 3/8"-24 plug. Unless by random chance, you have a parts store near you with the M10 plug.

I went through basically the same thing when I tried to find 5 lug discs with a countersunk hole in the factory position.

Yeah, right. The *dealership* is gonna be my first, or even second choice to find a part.

I can't tell if that's sarcasm or not. If it is...

Checking the Advance Auto website, you paid around $60 and got a reman master cylinder and didn't get the right part until five or six tries later. The dealer would have given you a brand new part, and the correct one, for a few dollars more.

I'm not sure why people hate the dealer so much sometimes.

If it wasn't sarcasm, carry on.

It was sarcasm.
I paid $35 at Advance Auto, returned it then paid $40 (gave my $5 core to Advance) at NAPA.
1. The dealership routinely charges 2 to 3 times more for parts that you can find easily at local stores.
2. The dealership rarely has parts for 23 year old cars in stock and it usually takes at least 3 days to get them. Local stores, if they order it it's next day or by 1pm or 4pm same day depending on the part.
3. Dealerships make a habit of ripping off the consumer, so just on principle alone, I'd rather support honest local businesses that are struggling to keep afloat.
4. Along the same lines, I'd rather give my money to you guys and get a good used part then go to a dealership(obviously not looking for a used master cyl).
As far as I'm concerned, dealerships are good for *extremely* hard to find items and miscellaneous nuts/bolts/gaskets, etc--very little else.

So, even tho it took 2 weeks to source this part, I still feel *much* better giving my money to a local parts shop than to a dealership.

..also,
5. Last time I took this car to a dealership, they tried to charge me $4500 for a rebuilt engine, when all I needed was a throw-out bearing.
6. The last car I bought from a dealership threw a rod at 3 years/66,000 - the warranty was 5 years/60,000. They refused to honor the warranty.

I could go on, but I think you get the picture..

You know before I started working at Malloy Mazda in Woodbridge, VA I thought the exact same thing. I did not realize how much rx7 community business my boss Ray Crowe does. We ship parts across the country and give a hell of a discount. I just looked up a brake master cylinder for an '88 rx7 turbo 2 with ABS. Club pricing is $50. It is a little bit more than you spent at Advance Auto but at least you know the part would be correct. Only takes two days to ship it right to your door as well. I'm sure you would be really suprised as to how many rx7 parts we keep in stock at all times.

I guess I should try not to generalize.
What's the contact info for your dealership? I'll keep them in mind for next time.

Malloy Mazda direct line to parts 703-490-8263. You can either ask for myself(Casey) or Ray the rx7 guru.

After messing with these cars for a lotta years now there are just certain things I dont bother "shopping" arround for, MC would be on that list.

Try finding a manual rack for an s4.

Just lube up, bend over and its really not so bad. All the time spent screwing arround is worth more to me than the extra spent at Malloy or my local dealer.
