How Fast

Well guys, how fast do these things go? I'm looking at a second gen, NA RX7. I think these cars look like a lot of fun, but I'm not sold yet. I need to know anything you can tell me about stock performance, and what upgrades are cheapest, but will work the best.

Rick

There aren't any T2s around here, otherwise I'd be pretty tempted. Instead, there is an 86 NA GXL with only 65000 KMs on a new motor. He wants less than $2000 cdn for it, so it should be a pretty sweet deal.

An NA with stock ports can be made satisfyingly quick for about $1000

Intake, header, exhaust, TB mod, Efan, ect.

Look at some sites like,

www.racingbeat.com

www.mazdatrix.com

www.corksport.com

and SEARCH THIS FORUM.

Buy a 7 dude, they ARE a lotta fun.

I had an 87 NA with a pace setter exhaust that I got to an indicated 140 (INDICATED)
I have trouble believing it.

'91 turbo @ 145mph and could have gone faster, '88 convertible @ 85mph w/top down...
Get one Rick, they're fast, quick, handle, sexy, etc... I don't care which one I drive, they're both great cars. Even stock the so called "slowest" 7 (convertibles) are still quick cars in my opinion, hell anything you can rev to 6k then shift all day long is gonna be fun to drive.

Completely stock an n/a isn't that fast, even the TII is only moderately quick stock, nothing amazing.

An n/a will take a lot of money and time to make it "fast" but with a TII it's incredibly simple. Also, top speed doesn't mean something is "fast" necessarily, I mean you may be able to go ~140mph but it could take you forever to get there (in an N/A especially).

If you buy an rx7 na you will top that out.. without spending LOTS of cash to get some real power... and you will have fallen in love with Rx-7's so save yourself the trouble and buy an Rx7 Turbo

When I bought my first 7 this guy was selling a N/A ant a T2. I test drove em both. There was a huge difference in the power of the turbo. Just get a T2, you see N/A owners going to alot of trouble trying to turbo there cars all the time, and then after all that work there up to stock T2 power. The N/A is still a great car and handles great.

are they fast?

how fast do you want to go?

if you like the quarter mile, or street racing, than find a tii. you'll be hard pressed to get a n/a into the 13.00s. even 14 isn't exactly easy sometimes. but if you just want a quik ride for the street, i'd say an n/a ain't too bad a choice. i think i'd rather have a car that maxes out before i do, if you know what i mean. 2000 grand for an 86 gxl is a decent price if it's all in good order. how many km's on the car itself? and what is the condition?

top speed is much more dependent on aerodynamics and drag than on weight.

most twisty tracks don't have straights that reach 140+. To appreciate the car and what it was made for you need to CORNER it. Once you feel the way a stock 7 corners and how QUICK it is then you'll understand the car.

www.nasaproracing.com
www.speedventures.net
www.scca.com

Notice the NRHA is NOT one of those links?? Get a muscle car if you want to drag race. The 7 is made to race on a track with turns......both left AND right.

Speedventures is racing on California Speedway in May. If your car gets close to 140 then you should take it to that track.....you'll win easily. Just hope you have sticky tires B4 you get to turn one.

kinda hard to say.......i remember starting in 3rd, then hitting 140 in 4th and then it took a while for it to keep speeding up in 5th.......i let off at 150(by this time I had a boost controller and fuel controller) and nowhere near redline if i remember right.......the first time i did that was waaaay back in the day before it had any mods and I hit 150 and it would bounce down to 145 then back up to 150 then 145 (fuel cut?)
