Question How far should 6 port actuators move????

I have found why they did`nt move at all before, the nipple from the exhaust tube was cracked and finally broke off when I tried to release the hose. But I hooked up the hose to a bike air pump and I could eaisily make both actuators move but only about 1/4" of travel, are they supposed to go all the way until the black arm hits the actuator or is that all they normaly move, when I try to push it any further it won`t go at all. Most actuators that I have seen for other things go further than these so that is why it does`nt look right to me.

Does anyone know the amount of movenment expected?

John

P.S. If they are not opening enough how can I loosen them without removing the whole manifold.

I have an FB 84SE with 6PI and you can see the shiny part on the shaft of the actuator rod that they only move about 1/4" or so. Not much more than that.

If you look at the end-link on the rod where it is attached to the offset lug, you can see that it won't take much movement of the actuator rod to make the cylinder rotate about 90 degrees or more. This is about as far as the cylinder needs to rotate to expose the larger hole of the 6PI ports.

If you check out Mazdatrix website, they have some cutaway views of 6PI engines showing the '6' ports and the rotating cylinders. They don't rotate far, but the size of the holes in the cylinders allows for a considerable amount of air to be allowed to pass through the opening.

I think your system sounds about right, but I would go about finding another manifold vacuum hookup to get those '6' ports running again. They really make a difference for low-rpm power. I've read on these boards about people locking (gluing) them open, but this would be detrimental to low RPM power in that they increase the airspeed for incoming air if locked completely open, and the 6PI engines have a throttle body design and injector map that is built specifically for rotating (and variable) '6' port opening speeds and sizes.

Going outside of this may increase top end horsepower at high RPM, but kill low end torque, since you're altering the air intake speed and subsequent atomization of the fuel and how it gets into the rotor. JMTC. HTH,
