You just make a stop at neutral. You don't go from 3rd to 2nd, but you go from 3rd to neutral and then to 2nd. You blip the throttle when you're at neutral and downshifting. With upshifting you don't blip the throttle. That's it.

The thing is that you syncronise the speed of the wheels+gears+layshaft+motor with eachother. When you downshift your motor gets a higher RPM so you already did the work for your engine by bliping the throttle. If you upshift you should wait till the RPM of the engine drops so it matches the speed of the wheels. This is if you want to drive smoothly and if you want to go easy on your car parts.

I think he's under the influence it makes you faster ;-)
It only helps by not abusing your synchros.
Its for big trucks and old old cars that didnt have synchros (synchromesh) on their transmissions.
This was used to equal out the speed that the tranny was spinning at so you wouldnt mash something spinning at 6000RPM and something spinning at 4500RPM suddenly. You really don't have to worry about that now adays unless the synchros in your tranny are kinda crappy or you just want a smoother ride.

Double clutching is a waste of time. Think about it. If I am next to you and we are racing. I shift normally. Meanwhile your messing around double shitting. Who's going to finish first? The one that gets through the shifts faster.

Edit: Node's right....

It's just for smoothness not speed. When cornering fast you need to shiftdown smooth so your car won't jerk around.

I can downshift going around a turn...no need to double clutch either...Clutch in, gear out, match rev, gear in, clutch out.

With synchro's you can do it that way. It's the easiest way and not difficult to learn.

When your syncros are shot to **** like mine, it helps the shifting go smoother. It saves on clutch wear during downshifts too (IF you do it right. Do it wrong and you burn more clutch)

Watch F&F recently? Vin D tells the other guy he should have been double clutching. During a drag race. There's a good way to ADD a second to your run. Double clutching is more important during a downshift than an upshift. Plus you can then learn the advanced technique of heel-toe, which is when you execute a double clutch downshift while standing on the brakes. Good for corner entry if you get it right. It's also easier to pull off if you're pigeon toed (the tips of your feet point towards each other while standing up) I'm not pigeon toed, and need more practice, my leg hurts if I doo it too often
