engine dyno would allow you to...
You would need to have all of the ecu hooked up, a fuel pump and filter, make sure the flywheel was on, and an external ingition system, hook up a radiator and a fan, oil lines to oil cooler. You could mount it to a engine stand by either the front or back, just make sure nothing hits on it. You'd need to have a tranny bolted onto the engine, so as to have a starter to turn it over.

It is possible, sure, but its not worth it. I think I could swap the motors faster than trying to set up and external engine.
If you really wanna check, hook up a TII tranny and a TII starter to the engine and crank it over to do a compression test. A compression test is all thats really needed to check the engine if you go ahead and use all your other cars fuel suystem and ingnition.
But the easiest way to actually start it would be by using a shop with an engine dyno.
