How do you put short-pinion gears in an N/A?

Ok, I was origionally wanting to put a 12A FB transmission in my car, but was talked out of it. So now, a new question.

What are options for putting a short pinioned R&P in an N/A FC's (long pinioned) rear end?

So far, the only option I've come across without having to replace the entire differential, is having a machine shop make a custom long pinion (or modify the stock long pinion) and mating the pinion gears to it.

What would be the most cost-effective way about putting short pinion gears into an N/A FC???

Liquid,

You outlined pretty much your ONLY option.

Speedsource and a few other shops will do this work for you, I doubt you're going to easily find a machineshop willing to tackle this locally.

why did they talk you out of the 12A tranny?

Because I (for the most part) have a perfect FC tranny. It shifts smoother than anyone's I know of, synchro's are great, never heard a grind out of it.

Who knows, when it goes out (however long that will be) I'll probably have it rebuilt w/ FB gears. Until then, I'll just work with what I have, and use the cash in other areas.

BTW, sorry about the IM. I wasn't logged in, and didn't see that I had a response.

Like SILK said the only way to do it is to spend the $$$ and have the pinion lengthened.

If you're looking into rebuilding the tranny and going with a different gear set look into the Miata set. Pineapple mentioned it to me a while back and I checked out the ratios. Forget what they are exactly but 2-5 are much closer ratios and the OD gear is like a .85.

I'm SURE you were envious of my custom servicable driveshaft, though! Go for it!

2 local's that have been around a while have mentioned they doubt the strength of the pinion extension. Will anyone vouch for their strength? I can't see them being weak myself.

Um, just about every Speedsource car races on that setup with 5.12s or 4.88s.. Full on ***** out racing. It's strong enough.

Is it going to hold up to drag racing and the shock loading there, I don't know, but they get a beating road racing and hold up ok.

While were on this topic, Im planning on swapping FB gears into my FC tranny, and was wondering if there was a write up or a how-to anywhere , I couldnt find one. Ive never taken a tranny apart b4, is it difficult? Could I just take the 2 trannys to a shop and say "put these gears into this tranny"??
