How do you get the steering wheel faceplate off?

I want to get at my horn wires and such, but i couldn't really figure out how to get just the faceplace part off the wheel.. I thought it was just the 2 screws through the back, but it seems to be attatched in the middle aswell.. I removed the mazda emblem, but couldn't see anything holding it in, except the main steering nut.

Do i have to take the whole wheel off?

i think you missed a screw, put the key in the car and turn the wheel and look for one more.

I have an 87 TII. On that model, you DO have to take the nut off the steering shaft in order to remove the faceplate. I can't remember whether or not the whole wheel has to come off, or just the nut, but the nut comes off for sure.

Edit: I'm going out on a limb here, but if I recall correctly, the two screws you removed from the back are what hold the horn button assembly in place.

Theres 3 screws that hold the horn button/faceplate onto the wheel.

S4 car:

Pop the mazda logo out of the center of the wheel, then impact gun the nut off the shaft, pull the wheel - then you can remove the "center section"

S5 car:

Undo the three screws on the back of the wheel, pull the center section, unplug the horn wire, undo the nut off the steering shaft - pull the wheel

It also depends on what model you have. My '88 GXL has three screws, one behind each "arm" of the steering wheel.

10AE's and some 88TII's have the same style wheel as S5's, I'd think GXL's may be the same.

it's not an S5 wheel though, but it's the same 3-spoke design.
