How do you check the timing if you car won't idle?

Ok, here is the deal. I have not been able get my turbo convertible to idle since I put the engine in a few weeks ago. A few kind forum members suggested that I re-check for vacuum leaks, adjust the TPS, and check the timing. I checked for vacuum leaks very throughly and my boost guage reads -18mm Hg while the car is on(above 3k). I also adjusted my TPS. My problem is that I'm not sure how to check the timing since the car won't idle. The FSM says to check the timing at idle since the ignition timing gets advanced as the rpm increases.

Could someone please tell me how I can check my timing without the car idling?

What are some other common problems that could cause my car to start up and rev fine, but not stay alive below 3k? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
This site has been instrumental in my conversion so far, please help me work out the bugs and get this turbo vert on the streets.

Thanks again, HHTurbovert

loosen the CAS and try turning it to see if the idle smooths out, i recently had this problem with a rebuild and it wound up being that the CAS gear was one tooth off causing a lack in power and idle instability, by turning the CAS the timing will be closer that you can get it to idle decently and see if the CAS is out of time with the gear because you won't be able to move it enough to get it into timing specs.

Pull the fuse for the fuel injectors and have someone crank the ignition while you use the timing light to check the ignition timing.

Also, check the FSM or Haynes manual, but I believe that you can jump the initial set coupler and it will prevent the ignition timing from advancing. I'm not 100% sure on that because I have a Haltech, not the stock ECU system.
