How do you or can you check to rear diff while it's still on the car

How do you or can you check to rear diff while it's still on the car

Also.....I went to change the gear oil and on the drain plug stuck to the magnet was verrrrry fine filings. Now is this bad or normal? I know they put magnets in the bottom of transmission pans to collect stray filings and it's somewhat normal to find them stuck to it.
