How do you adjust the air flow on the stock air intake box?

Im not sure what exactly the pieces are called, but in a stock 88tii theres a black intake box on the lower left corner (if youre facing the engine). I was told that theres some type of "adjuster" underneath that which I can turn to increase the air flow to lean out the gas.

If anyones been following my posts, I asked what I could do to pass smog. Apparently, I passed smog earlier this February while I had non properly working fuel injectors in my car, which choked out the gas. Since then, I had them cleaned and tested to flow correctly, and that might be the reason I didnt pass smog by the 1.3% I am over the max limit.

I was told to try leaning out the gas by using this "dial", but Im not all to sure where its located, other than being "under the intake box".

-Do I take the entire box off?
-Is the dial on the box or under the box?
-If its on the box, where do I find it?

Thanks

It's located on the front of the passenger side strut tower. You shouldn't have to remove your air cleaner assembly.

P.S. The normal advice is "leave it alone", but if you're desparate to pass emissions...

the idle R-L control adjustment will be on a bracket right by the pressure sensor infront of the passenger strut tower,

this will only adjust your idle lean rich mixture.... so if your failing at cruizing speed it wont help!

First, just temporarly remove the air filter for the test. That often does the trick.

Tweaking the AFM is tricky & risky.
You see the concept. With a "little" more spring tension the door will pass more air at the same position.

The most affordable way to tune is to add a piggyback air flow converter, like an Apexi S-AFC.
It goes between the AFM & the ECU to tweak the signal, so you can add or subtract fuel at different RPM's and different power levels.

It wasnt what any of you guys were thinking.

I called my mechanic and he said to remove the black intake box and then remove this smaller, silver metal box from underneath it. On that metal part, you remove a plastic cover and theres like a couple of wires and coils inside. Theres a small wheel inside with jagged teeth and a lock/latch that when moved 1 tooth over, I guess, leans out the gas/air ratio.

Any of that make sense? He said to move it clockwise 2 teeth over, get it smogged, then move it back.

You're talking about modifications to the AFM. Don't do that, you could easily brake it and end up having to buy a new one.

There are better ways to pass emissions.

Do not mess with the AFM! If you don't understand what you're doing (and no offence but you don't sound like you do) you're just as likely to make things worse. If you can't pass emissions then something is wrong with the car. Find out what that is and fix it.
