How do Ram Air scoops on Camaros work?

How Do the ram air scoop on the Camaro SS and the Firebird TransAm with the WS6 package work?

I mean when it starts raining wouldn't water get get scooped in, and then through the filter? Because water in engine is bad right?

So how do they get around this problem?

Just curious...

(Yes i know i'm in the wrong forum... still just a question)

I dont think it really matters, because many people have told me those scoops dont provide much function until about 100mph...

I guess you mean the cowl induction's on early bowtie's..the long "bump"
on the hood, with a "flapper" at the back, close to the windshield.
Those work on vacum ,from under the carb(s) so when your foot is on
wide open a vacum makes the flapper open, for "fresh" air,,when all
the parts work,it works well,,,no rain worry's there.. the early mustangs,
T/A's,"cuda's,torino's,with the "shaker" hood scoop,except T/A(it faces
the other way)have a BIG *** air cleaner canister,with a flapper too.
it works the same,on vacum, more less ram air, because of the scoop
opening faces foreward.now in rain your NOT going to be wide open,,
so no water gets in,,there are gutters around the air canister,to a hose
that drains the water down through the engine compartment...the area
right in front of windshields (cowl) where the vents are,is the best place
for any kind of intake, engine, fresh air, because of the air flow over the
car,VS in the middle of the hood,,scoops can have the reverse effect
if not put in the right places...engines love water, the best way to get rid
of carbon, water is twice the density of air,it's air twice, ever hear of water
injection for internal combustion engines,l,water is good,,just not tons

No, he's talking about the hood scoops on late model SS and WS6 F-bodies.

On the SS, the scoop takes in air, redirects it back towards the front of the car, and dumps it right in front of the air induction lid. There's slots in that lid to take in air, but I wouldn't call it true ram air (even if they brand it as such).

Same thing with the WS6, it just doesn't need to wrap around the hood to duct the air.

Suncoast makes a nice filter element that seals up against the two upper ram air ports in the WS6 hood to force all that air into the engine, making it true ram air.

Hey Silkworm, how's the car coming? I'm trying like hell to get mine on the track next month. It'll be a miracle if I can! Post your webpage, think I lost it again.

some say cowl induction was more of a sales gimmick than anything else... the Firebird scoops look like two giant nostrils.

Hey Chris,

Still have to get a new front fascia.. Then I can fix all the damage from Sears Point on the TA. Still a few weeks before that's fixed.

Oh wait, you meant the RX-7 Sorry. We finished the floorpan modifications for head clearance, so I've got a solid inch between my head and a roll bar pad. Seat mount and rear brace are done. 7 of 10 of the gussets are done, with the last three slated for Thursday. The final roll bar reinforcement goes in Friday, and we weld up the radiator mounts Saturday. I get it home Sunday, and start painting again.. We f'd up all the paint on the interior with welding.. <sigh>

Dash, wiring, and cooling system, and this thing is a fingers cross away from firing off. ETA for that, end of 1st week Feb. ETA for completion, late Feb I hope.

My mom has a 99 Grand Am GT w/Ram Air. I decided to take a look at how it worked. It's not even a true Ram Air system. I looked at my friend's 2K1 WS6 and compared the two. W/my mom's car, it has an intake tube that runs to the airbox. W/the WS6, the filter is right up front. On my mom's car, it runs back a goods distance, which IMO gives the plastic air runner tube to catch some engine heat against it. It's kind of flimsy. I must say though, the supposed Ram Air does roar when you get on it. I love being able to hear the intake over the engine. Dropped a K&N in it for the hell of....it whistles

Those ram air hoods are hella functional for getting some fresh air in, and its near impossible to gen enough water in there to water lock anything.

I'll tell you how a ram air system works.

MAGIC!!!

No, I'm serious, its magic.

Oh, ok, about the only gain to a ram-air system is that you are not pulling air from under the hood, so its a little cooler. Plus the average "ram-air" system has less curves and kinks in the induction system, so there is a little less head loss (less restriction).

Thats about it, you really dont see a large pressure increase at the inlet of a ram air system, until your over 120 or so, I mean, even at 200 miles per hour the increase is only supposed to be around 7% increase in power.

I have to say that the older style Chevy z24 had a pretty neet "ram air" setup if you will. The open part is back near the window where the air is more dense. More dense because the winshield creates turbulance and compresses the air. The engine breaths directly off of that compressed spot, but only when you are going like a buck! It makes it sound hella cool cause te intake is really close to you.
