How do our power door locks work?
Please help me with this and I promise I will write up a very detailed walk through on installing keyless entry systems on our cars.
ok. I found the relay in the back. I have the wires hooked up correctly but when I hit "unlock" onmy remote only the passengerside door unlocks and when I hit lock the actuator on the passengerside door tries to lock but then stops.
The driver side door only operates itself instead of both doors, and only with the switch on the actualy door. why?
Does anyone have any idea on how I can get ths keyless entry system working? The diagrams in the service manual and haynes manual are absolutley worthless.

ever since i got my car i have looked into getting a keyless entry system for my car. i have an 1986 gxl that didn't come with power door locks. at first i was planning on installing a set of factory power door locks because it would've been relatively inexpensive but from what i've read the factory power door locks only operates the passenger door.
*please correct me if i'm wrong*
you may have to look into purchasing an actuator for the driver side door.

I can't believe it. I looked at the wiring diagrams too ('88) and they do only show one door lock motor on the RH side. Is that stupid or what. I don't get what good that is. Half the use of door locks is to unlock the drivers door after opening the passenger door first.
Did any of the models have door lock actuators on both doors?

My 89 GTU has actuators on both side, but they don't work....my alarm is kinda screwed up because of that, I have to unlock my door then unarm my alarm, but every once and awhile both door will lock when I try on my car, then I turn it off and they lock, I'm confused I just want to get it working

damn! Here is how my car works.
Lock/unlock Driver side door from the switch, only the driver side door locks/unlocks.
Lock/unlock Driver side door using the key, BOTH doors lock/unlock.
Lock passenger side door from the switch, only the passenger side door locks
Now, if I unlock the passengerside with the switch both doors unlock, unless I use the key in which case only the passenger side door unlocks.
That leads me to believe I obviously have a motor in my driver side door right? Well when I installed my keyless entry system, only my passenger side worked. And it would only work when I wanted to unlock. It would not lock the door, however you could hear it wanting to. So I removed the system.
This is the most screwed up power locking system I have ever delt with.

I do not believe you can (easily) retrofit power locks to '86 or '87 models because the wiring harness is not quite right -- it doesn't have a connector for the relay in the back of the car or for the door lock solenoid (aka engine) in the passenger door. I speak from personal experience, having acquired all the necessary parts for my 87 GXL, then discovering the problem. (The wiring diagram for the car in the 87 Haynes and factory manuals doesn't show any circuit for power locks, which do appear in the '88 manual.)
And, to the best of my knowledge, none of the cars came with a solenoid on the driver's side. The idea, I guess, was to make it easy for the driver to lock and unlock the passenger door from his or her side, but not vice versa.

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
There is no motor in the drivers door. It is the standard "Follow me" system.
Follow me systems are a switch in the master door, and a actuator in the slave door. The switch in our case is in the drivers door and the slave is in the passengers door.
You would need to add a DL motor/actuator into the drivers door to make a aftermarket Keyless system work both doors.
It is also very easy to wire off of the factory interior switch to a aftermarket door lock controller, and install a door lock motor in the drivers door, so that both door switches would lock and unlock the other door.
Its not brain surgery it is very simple and has been done on the FC since 85 when the cars came out.

I agree with Icemark. It is very easy to add power/remote locks to the FC. I did it years ago and it took all of 1 hour.
