How do I remove tie rod/pivot ball boots?

I'm trying to replace my broken boots with the ones that came in my ES (Energy Suspension) set and I can't get the old boots off for the life of me. Is there a trick to this?

So they just slide on/off (in theory)? I had this thing totally ripped apart and it still wouldn't come off.

if you look really close there is a locking ring on the very bottom of the old boot i used a screwdriver and a small ball-peen hammer to tap it off, but the ones that i got from E.S. really didnt "lock" down around the ball joint or tie rod, also make sure to pack the new boot with grease before you put it on.

Wow, +infinitum points to fast87. I wish I had noticed that before. I thought it was part of the actual piece and not removable.

Will I need that metal ring for any reason or does it just get chucked in the trash?
