Do a search for "compression test". It contains instructions on modifying a regular compression guage to work with the rotary. Long story short, you remove the little valve in the guage and connect it in place of one of the leading spark plugs...You are looking for 3 even bounces of 70PSI or greater per rotor.

look thru the exaust ports with a good flashlight. You can also run your fingers on the seals. You might also want to check if it bounces back but dont push too hard because you dont want loose the strength of the apex seals springs.
Compression test is the best though!..Mazda will do it for you for about a 100bucks!
