how do I fix my gas gauge?

drove the car for 50 miles and it didnt move really. turned it off for lunch. started it up again and backed out quickly.

next thing I notice it said 1/4 tank then it said less than that till I thought I was going to run out.

I stopped to get gas and it only held 5 gallons......wow filled up for 5 gallons!!!....

no seriously I do not have my manual for the car yet and I just got the car and have put less than 100 miles on it so I do not know what it is .

what do I need to check or do to fix.?

Since I filled up it has barely moved again in about 25 miles.

also my auxillary ports are messed up cause the dipshit had a gutted american cat on it so I know I am not getting 40_ miles a gallon.

the sending unit in the fuel tank may not be working properly. Under the carpet in the trunk is a panel to access the pump/sending unit assembly. When you get your manual you will see more info about that. You can get the factory service manual online for free at www.fc3s.org and www.iluvmyrx7.com

Ya i got this damn problem too. I'd definetly like to see what other people have to say about this......
...but from what i know thus far it could be either the gauge, the wiring, or the fuel sender unit thing.

edit: oops never saw project84's post

I tried 3 different clusters and results were the same till I changed out fuel pump assembly in the tank. the sensor was bad I guess.

i know from experience that the 1st gen in tank floating sensors get corroded. very possible on 2nd gen too. youll have to drain the tank and pull it assy. to brush the connectors. on the plus side, it costs nothing if you already have a wire brush

mine also did something similar to your problem. after filling up one day... it dropped to 1/4 after about 20 minutes of driving. Then a day later.. it dropped to E... freaked me out. I had been driving around just waiting for the low fuel light. Finally pulled the fuel pump out... looked at it... moved the lever around... put it back in... and it works again... just like new. I dunno. maybe i was lucky. ^_^

I'm posting this for EAGE8, because his car is at my house and it just sitting here.... so I'm gonna start fixing all it's problems. Anyways, same problem with the gauge thing so I think I'll try a new sensor, but it has another ... somewhat major problem. When you feel the tank up, if you wait for the pump to autoshut off, the gas tank pours gas from the tank, and it looks like its coming from the top. After that it has no leaks, so dunno what's wrong with it. Check the seals between the body and the tanks, and they are fine, the previous owner said the pump (walbor) wasn't set all the way down and that's why it was doing that. But the pump is in tank, so shouldn't the gas stay in tank? anyone please!!

If you notice on the sending unit where the arm pivots there are copper bars and as the float lowers and rises it will make contact with a certain bar. This gives the reading. Take some high grit sand paper and clean these bars very gently until the corosion comes off. Mine would'nt read a full tank untill I did this.

there were a few threads about this in the past. i did a search a while ago and found one with the part number you would need to replace to fix this problem. but it is there if you need to find it.
