Question HOW to change tranny fluids?

hi

i have a 2nd gear grind so i was going to change to redline tranny oil. I ordered some and it should be here friday. Can someone tell me how you change the tranny fluid? i searched for it and couldnt find it. How do i change the tranny fluid and also the differentials. If someone could explain it would be really helpful.

Thanks

drain by unplugging drain plugs, put back on plugs, fill till you can stick ur finger in the fill hole n touch the oil, if you can touch it its probably enough, put back on fill plug (dont forget to whipe)

I'd would first unscrew the fill plug on both the tranny and diff. That way if you have a problem getting either out you will not be "stuck" with no fluids in either until you manage to get them off.

You will need some type of gear oil pump. You will not be able to fill directly from the bottle. You can find pumps at car parts stores. They are usually 15-20.00 there. I got a LubriMatic at a Boating/Marine store for $8.95. Ask for a Marine Lower Unit Pump. It screws directly on the gear oil bottle and has a metalic one way valve on the end so ya do not have to worry about gear oil dripping all over while you store it on a shelf etc.

Fairly easy, check here and a haynes manual is pretty good too.

Might want to check what sockets you have-I changed mine last year had to go out and buy a 23MM and 24MM if I remember correctly.

As others have said, make sure you can get the fill off first, thats what was frozen on my '88 vert. I used a long pipe on the rachet handle to free.

Easier to fill if you have a pump but I cheated and just used a small tube, most fluids come in the squeeze bottles but you have to be patient if you do it this way.

I've tried two ways of filling the tranny:

#1 Pump that screws onto the bottle of gear oil. Simple and effective. But I didn't like laying under car pumping and pumping and pumping. I suppose I could have attached a longer hose at the end so I wouldn't have to be under the car, but I tried #2 for something different.

#2 Took a garden pressure sprayer (1 gallon size) and put bigger diameter tubes in it than were included. Pump up the sprayer, insert the hose into the fill port, and open up the sprayer so it starts to pump fluid. It didn't work as well as I wanted (took too long IMO) but I had some parts laying around.

the higher one is the fill, lower is the drain. You should also download the FSM from the link of the first page, it is in PDF form and great to have, has pictures of the procudure.

Yes Aarons little pneumatic was looks so damn easy.
I'm am about to do it to both my FC's so I'm gonna do that trick since last time I sat under my car for a half hour pumping a shitty gear oil pump until it broke(luckily after I finished)

Hmmmm.... thinking........
Could use a Bicylce pump so theres less chance of it going Kabbooom! It pushes quite bit of air so it shouldn't be that hard. Although I wanna try the compressed air way (hehehehee BOOM!)

to fill the tranny back up i just took a long hose and fed it down through the engine bay and into the fill hole.. then used a funnel to pour the redline into the hose.

Hey, I like that idea! I'll give it try over the weekend. Sure sounds better than laying around on pavement
