Hmmmm??......it died :(

hello,
Im not to sure what happened to my car so I was hoping some of you might have a better idea. I was driving along goin up a bit of a hill in first gear, i took it to about 5800rpm then changed to second, the car lunged foward like it would when changing up a gear. But then it jus died like it had no fuel or spark, if i put my foot down it jus kinda putted along until it slowed right down to a stop and the engine died fully, it wouldnt start again at all. It cranks over and its getting fuel and has spark, the compression sounds healthy enough, I cant affrd a compression tester. It almost fired yesteday a couple of times. I hope its not dead.
Thanks...

Why don't you tell us a bit about the car? Year, mods, mileage would be usefull, otherwise check the basics - popped a vac line off? Connector came loose? etc.

yeah umm..sorry i wasnt thinking yesterday when i posted that...its a 1988 13bt with a k&n pod and a 3" exhaust, Im not sure if it is a vacume line ive checked all i can see, is there any specific line that would make the car just stop??. i was goin up a hill in 1st gear bout 5000rpm but stayin off the boost because I had noticed a slight miss @ high revs without boost, as soon as the boost comes in its fine tho. As soon as I changed to second and put my foot down, it just died like it was gettin no gas or spark. Ive removed the fuel filter and it seems pretty stuffed...the fuel goes in one end purple like its ment to be and comes out black, (yes, i DO have the filter the right way round), could this have made it stop?? could this have fuckd up my engine? there is spark...however there seems to be more spark in the lower plugs. Before this it was running fine...started everytime, almost 1st go. I think this engine has done about 60,000 k's not entirely certain tho...cos i have no speedo cable....anyone have one of these they dont want??

RX7's have two independant ignitions systems, leading and trailing. The car will start and run without the trailing but probably not without the leading. The lower (leading) plugs will fire twice as often as the top (trailing) plugs.

Generally, popping a vaucuum line will not cause it to grind to a stop while running but it can easily cause it to die at idle and not start.

Hmm, purple fuel? odd but certainly better than black! Change your fuel filter. Check your fuses as well.

For spark, I assume you used a timing light, compression; it makes the same compression sounds as before the incident; how do you know its getting fuel?

i discovered somthing kinda interesting.....the leading and trailing spark plugs were round the wrong way, they would have been like this all the time....could this have done any damage to the engne?? Im getting a new fuel filter today. Im not too sure how much fuel its getting because i have to get the new filter then i jus gotta crank the engine over and look for the fuel mist coming out. thank you for your help .

no the plugs wer'ent round the wrong way...the hains manual contradicts itself...in the caption below the photo it says leading top, trailing bottom....but if you read the text its the other way round.
it is leading = lower, trailing = upper isnt it?

Yep, leading=lower, trailing=top. Have you tried compression testing the engine? This will tell you if it ate a seal or something. Do a search for compression on this site and you'll come across a description of how to do the test.

Did your fuel filter rip or something? If it ripped all that crap could flow through and plug you injectors, if you still have it cut it open and check. Fuel should not be black going to the injectors

THANXX EVRY1......it goes... better than ever . I think it was the fuel filter had ripped. I replaced that and took out the fuel rails and injectors and had a play wiht them an got them firing in a jar and put it back together. I also found a vacume line that had broken and quite a big hose under the BAC valve that was broken.....its much easier to start now and doesnt backfire big flames anymore and has noticibly more power. Thankyou
