hmm.. strange leak

Take a look at the picture of the motor.. The motor in the picture isn't the one in question, but I didn't have any pictures of the actual motor..

Anyhow, picture the water pump is intalled on this motor.. now take a look at the red arrow on the front cover...we just got a friend's motor up and running finally, however we have a nasty leak coming from somewhere.. we havn't removed the water pump yet to get a better look at where the heck the leak is coming from...

We have a stream (no drips, but a stream) of oil running down the front cover in the direction and area of the red arrow in the picture... where the heck could this oil be coming from? The turbo feed line behind the waterpump housing looks dry and shows no signs of leaking.. the whole motor looks dry, except from the stream of oil that runs down the front cover when the car is running...

going to be removing the waterpump tomorrow and taking a look to see if we can find the source, but wanted to see if anyone had any guesses before hand..

here's the pic

I have not seen the leak with my own eyes, but from Chris' description on the phone, I'm not sure that's an option. It seems to high up on the front cover. and it is flowing out from somewhere. I really think the only option is the main seal. Either that or...... Chris did Jeff actually get the oil pellet out? Max mentioned perhaps it's missing the copper crush washer, or the washer is "packed" out.

If it was the main seal, or the thermal pellet housing area I would think it would be comming directly from the front rather than on top-ish. It could be the CAS seal .. but unless you have some high *** oil pressure I would not think it would "flow" fom there though ..Cause i get no oil leaking from there then i have it finger tight while adjusting the timing, and I am running a high flow oil pump and 85 PSI OPR.

Hell what do i know .. just guessing, hope you figure it out .. keep us posted.

If the motor is spinning I'm thinking it would throw the oil up on the water pump. I'm guessing as well. I should be able to have a look at it this coming week. Should be able to find the leak.

it turns out to a large hole in the front cover... We are baffled as to how the hole got there... it's about the size of your big toe... bloody hell... removing the front cover is going to be a bitch with the motor still in the car.. maybe we can just patch it up for now??

I'll post some pics soon..

Not that big of a deal to pull the front cover with the motor still in. Fix it right IMO.

I've still got a S4 TII front cover and stuff that I bought off a forum member a while back before putting in an EMS (was going to use mechanical OMP, then just got lazy and premix all the time instead).

Shipping would be a piece though...
