Hm... Windows/sunroof & fuel economy

Well, I'm back from galavanting around the Midwest in my '7. I realized something - running with windows & sunroof open SUCKS fuel.

With the windows shut, and the AC on, I was getting 25-27mpg. Running with the windows & sunroof open, I was back down to my normal 20-22. Huge difference! Something to consider for those considering removing the A/C...

(S4 NA, rebuilt engine, running 75-80mph)

Yeah I see about 2 MPG loss when driving with the roof down at 100 MPH, but a 5 MPG loss seems a bit excessive.

Didn't remove the AC for fuel economy... removed it for better cooling and less clutter.

Yep..... air drag is a bitch aint it??? thats the parachute theory there, air comes in the windows and goes out the sunroof, harder to get out the sunroof than it is comming in the windows.... there goes the MPG!!

I noticed it this weekend myself.

Wow - The S5 turbo's drag is a surprise.

Can the IC scoop alone make tha much difference?

Where else is the parasite drag coming from?

No, the S5 turbo has ground effects that increase drag while lowering lift.

Ah - yes - The drag vs. downforce tradeoff.

I was with GZ91Rx7 on Sunday for the 7 meet in MI, and on the way home we ran accross a mustang convertible...(fun time here we come), and as we begin to pace him for a little race action, m buddy starts rolling up the windows and closing the sunroof(that was the indication that "it's on")
