Thumbs down clock jumps around-corrosion prob'

clock would be OK for awhile but then would jump around. Pulled the clock warning light assembly out and found that it had already been resoldered and that the problem was corrosion from the excess flux, probably from acid core solder, left on the board. Once I cleaned up-washed the board to remove it, the clock hasn't shifted since. Some people evidently think more is better, have mini mountains of solder on the board. Need to get desoldering tool and redo the resoldered connectons, chances are that when I get around to checking the CPU I'll find some of the same thing.

We assume jumping around means erratic changes in display values, and not loose mounting screws..

Nice troubleshooting job.

Yeah.....if it was changing times erractically, good job on fixing it

If it was literally "Jumping" around.....then bad to fix it, fun to watch

Cold solder joints, reheated (instead of the solder being removed and reflowed) often will have that problem.

and only a moron would use acid flux on a circuit board.

my clock has just started doing this... it never has even turned on since i bought the car, but today i cranked the car and 1:00 popped up on the clock... i attribute it to all the rain we got the past couple days. but then when i got to campus it started blinking a little and when i smacked the dash it reset from 1:12 to 1:00... now it's just really dim but is keeping correct time... is this the solder joints or possibly some other wiring problem?

probably cold solder joints in the clock.. or a bad room fuse... those are really the only two problems that can cause that.

I have most of the clock warning assemblies available already rebuilt on my webstore/site

Yea, I need to resolder mine. It goes dim or out, I whack it, it comes back. Passengers jump slightly the first few times, but they learn (as they learn that the upshift buzzer is not something to be afraid of... "4 annoying beeps before hitting cruising speed" and all).

DONT smack the dash as a warning to everyone, I did this a few months back, cracked the stereo surround and clock surround with just a small little whack. Felt so stupid too as I should have known better but wanted to know the time(it had been working fine up til then).
