hit's wall at 3500 rpm

i've serached some and from what i understand it's probably my secondary injectors... but i know the exact moment it happened so i wondered if any one else had any insight.. here we go...

'86 n/a 5spd

i was out driving some country roads and I decided to pass a slower moving car..i get on it, i'm intent on watching the road to make sure there's not a car coming the other way casue i'm kinda paranoid about that. so anwyays, i dont' hear the rev buzzer and take it up to 7500 rpm and it bounced there once of twice (rev lmiter?)... at this time my power steering dies... and i have no power above 3500 rpm...

i pulled over to a gas station first chance i got and notice both my a/c and power steering belt had fallen off... i had just retightened them earlier in the evening, the a/c idler pulley was giving me trouble so maybe it's outta whack and caused that belt to fall off and knock the p/s belt off too...

get to auto store put p/s belt on but leave a/c off because the idler woudln't move... power steering comes back but still no power above 3500...

it fells great up until 3500 then it just bogs down and almsot stops acclerating, i can limp it to 4000 but no more... revs higher under no load but not as fast as normal...

it's dark out now, i've tried to check for anythign too obvious and didn't find anything... tomorrow i'll hook the a/c back up but i kind of doubt that will do much...

from what i've read it sound liek my secondaries aren't firing.. is there anythign that could have caused this when i took it up too high? or was it jsut maybe coincidence? ever thing is exactly the same as before below 3500..

any input would be greatly apprciated.... thanks!

sounds exactly like a cat that disintegrated and clogged up whatever happened to be behind it, was the bonez the hi-flow cat version? usually when it happens you can't go much beyond 4,000 rpm...

mine has had the same problem for some time, but mine is a 87 turbo motor. I can tell you to check your resistor for the injectors( a small silve box mounted on the front of the passenger strut tower in the bay. ) Mine gave no resistance, but putting a new one on didnt solve my problem. oh well good luck

Clogged exhaust isnt going to magically make your car stop revving at 3800 RPM. Can you hit the redline in neutral?

pretty sure i can, i took it up to about 6k in neutral, slower than nromal but didn't fuss too much about gettignup there... i didn't go all the way to red line though.. will try tomorrow...

just a guess, J-Rat- when my OEM pre-cat crapped the bed and clogged the second cat, that's exactly what happened- car ran great to about 3500, then would slowly accelerate to about 4000, and would go no further....thought it was my secondaries, too, but there's a simple operational check for 'em to rule 'em out- pull the boost sensor plug, rev past 3500, and listen to 'em with a screwdriver or stethoscope...edit: and you can't tell in neutral, you need a load on the engine (for the cat)

J-Rat, you were right i went out and the front injector conector was really loose. i put it back on and it worked just like that!

it's still kinda loose, i'll need to secure it better to keep it from happened in the future... looks like part of the plasic on teh connector was chipped away...

also i notice my secondaries kinda turn freely, is this normal or shoudl they be tight?

thanks everyone for your help! glad this mishap was solved quickly and cheaply

If your resistor pack was reading no resistance, your injectors or your ECU might have gotten fried by the high current. Your injectors should read about 2-3 ohms resistance (I think). I don't know a good way to check the injector drivers in the ECU besides using an oscilloscope, preferably with a current probe, to look at the signal to the injectors.
