High Startup Idle/ Electrical Problem

I have two separate problems.
1. When I start up my car the idle is way high, around 4k to 4.5k. Not the typical 3k warmup. I usually have to put in in 1st and sit there for a minute so it isn't so damn loud. I am throwing a check engine light...Intake Air Thermosensor...would that be the problem? I can't fix it now because I don't really have time to mess with it since I am away at college.

2. I think it has to do with the alternator. I have tried to start it a couple times and it has just barely enough power to start...cranks very slow. Also at night, when I hit the brake pedal, the gauges will dim slightly. Can anyone verify if this is alternator or battery or maybe something else?

Thanks

1) I seriously doubt a bad air temp sensor is going to give you a 4.5K idle. You've got other problems. Check your idle per the FSM, and look for a badass vac leak...

2) Just the fact that you can start the car again the next day (slow cranking or not) means the alternator is at the very least still functional. Look at the starter. How old is it?

1. The high idle is only on start up...once it gets warmed up(5 minutes) it is fine. The idle lopes a bit but it isn't a problem. I will do what you said though.

2. I am pretty sure it isn't the starter because it doesn't have trouble starting, it has been slow to crank(but it started). Also, i left the flashers on one day for about 25 minutes and came out and the battery was dead. Also, the gauges dim when i step on the brakes at night. Could it be a shitty battery? maybe a combo of a weak alt. and bad battery?

1) Hmm, maybe the BAC is going wacko on you during the 3K warmup (or the air bypass valve maybe, if installed)

2) Starters will slow down as they age and gunk begins to build up between the brushes and commutator. If the starter is as old as the car, think about it, at least, as a culprit. A slow starter cranks the engine slower, of course, simulating the effects of a dying battery. Then again, it could be just a tired battery...
