high idle

i finally got the car to start with every turn of the key, but it idles at like 1500. when i start it, it goes to the 3k for warmup, i burp it and it goes down, but stays at 1200-1500 and runs rich even when its warmed up. any hints? is there a mixture screw or an idle set screw somewhere?

I assume we are talking about the 86, right?

If so, you have 3 ways to control your idle. However none of them are going to be very effective until your initial idle gets below 1000.

Have you allowed the car to warm up to operating temp?

yeah its the '86. i do let it warm up to temp. i let it warm for about 15-20 minutes. still runs really rich. smells like raw fuel.

it has been sitting for about 2 years when i bought it. i am just going through and cleaning it up, fixing all the broken stuff. it was overheating, so i have a new radiator and all hoses, replaced all the vaccuum lines, brakes, clutch. i was having problems with it flooding and not starting. i got that taken care of, but now it just idles at 1300, really smooth, but just too high.

Okay, that could involve quite a few things.

First off I would check the obvious. You cant time the motor or adjust your idle until you get it down out of 1300 rpms. Check things like, throttle cable slack. Possible missing vac lines. Etc. Most of the time, high idle is caused by vac leaks. Try spraying Carb cleaner around suspect areas.
