What are the possible high-flo cat options out there? Which of these cats would take best to a dyno-tuned RX-7?

 

I'm running a 3" Bonez cat. Or should say, will be running in the spring as the exhaust is still just madrel bent tubing hanging on my wall.....

Yes, the bonez cat is the ish! I even passed smog with it.

 

I've used an universal high flow magnaflow, but can't speak on how long it will last. Another option, its the SMB one from Ausrtalia, but it will also be a custom setup.

 

I heard that magnaflow hi flow cats are good, but I don't have any personal experience with them.

 

It was going to be a custom exhaust anyway, trying to mate speedsource headers to a high-flo cat to a single exhaust for STS2 autocrossing.

Some of the FD guys are using them, as they make a setup for the FDs; and if you look at their mufflers, you'll see that they are mighty identical to the RB ones

I would go with the magnaflow cat, just because they are dirt cheap; so even if you burn them, a replacement will cost you next to nothing.

 

Has your car been tuned on the dyno with an aftermarket header, catback and fuel and timing computer as well? What are the results? How long has the cat lasted?

I think the tuned exhaust will be much hotter than a stock exhaust with bolt-on replacements. That being said, I'm wondering how long these cats will last after tuning.

Dirt cheap or extra power? In STS2, I could use all the power that I can get.

That's why I can't comment on how long it will last.

 

In Japan, there is this brand called Metalit that's supposed to be the best.
It's a metal substrate catalytic that's supposed to outlast everything out there, and it's designed for motorsports use.
Guarantee it's going to outlast any ceramic catalytic.
Bad thing is that it's expensive!
The ones I see for sale on YJA are close to US$1,000 for FC specific applications.

Verocious Motorsports on eBay sells these CUTE metallic substrate cats that are very compact.
These are universal, so you need to do some welding.
I don't think they are made to pass emissions testing - I think it explicitly states that on the auctions.

The problem in my particular case is that SCCA requires cats to meet 4 restrictions, 1 of which is hard for an international manufacturer to meet.

"The converter must bear EPA-mandated labeling." That probably already knocks out the Verocious.

That's why I'm hesitant to go with SMB or Metalit, unless they'd be able to supply that labeling, if they're even aware of it.

 

Magnaflow makes those metal cats too. I was looking at them a while back when looking for a high flow cat for myself. They are expensive, but they are supposed to last forever.

 

If worse comes to worst, I'm just thinking about gray-ruling it and just putting the metallit on my car and saying, "Yeah, I'm sure they have the label somewhere."

 

I had a Bonez on an NA with a mild streetport, downpipe and Borla exhaust. Got about 30,000 miles out of it before the car would no longer pass MD emissions, but before that, it always passed emissions easily. Replaced it with a Random Technology cat which also passed emissions easily, but then sold the car. I still have the cat in my basement and may put it on my "new" 7.

By the way, I bought the ceramic substrate version of the Random Technology cat which they sell with flanges already to bolt right up to your stock exhaust. I think it was around $250. They also sell a stainless substrate version but that one is a universal which will have to be welded.

 

i have a magna-flow on my other mazda (non-turbo) and it did well to add a couple of hp's.

 

Some of the Metalit unts do come with documentation.
I dunno if the SCCA guys can read Japanese.
I think Metalic makes two different types of catalytics.
One if a stock replacement, and the other is a "Pro200" series.
I think the Pro200 series is for high performance and comes with no papers.
I find them regularly on YJA, but the ones with papers are up the ***!
We're talking usually US$500+...used.

Hmm, do these high flow cats make everything a lot louder? Or just slightly. I don't want to annoy the neighbors too much :P

Did it last after dyno tuning? I don't want my cats melting after tuning fuel and timing.

 

what's the common opinion on which one produces more power, Bonez or Magnaflow? Which one lasts longer?

Piece of **** for $250+

Blew out in 2,000km's of breakin driving. Front half melted into the back half after that and caused a massize exhaust restriction.

Would never buy it again.
