Hi, I'm new.

How is everyone, i've been checking out this forum for the last week or so, very nice environment. I've been on the 240sx forums for 5 months, and they're brutal...glad that to be here.

My story...I've been researching the 240sx for nearly 6 months, i've been looking for one for the last month. But, as I was bored at work I checked out craigslist, and found a 1988 RX-7 GXL, N/A...the next day I went and bought it. It was a impulse buy so to speak, I was just dumbfounded by the beauty. So, I'm pretty new to the whole no pistons concept, I get how the rotary works, but I'm not sure on everything, so expect some stupid questions from me (dont worry, ill search first)

My Car...Well the guy i bought it from was a rich lawyer that lives in NYC. The price was $1500 (good or not???). The car is in emmacluate cosmetic condition, no scathes or scratches!!! (I'm a noob at stick shift) The transmission seems strong, but sometimes I can feel the reverse gear moving in the ****, when i'm at a stop and go from neutral to reverse?? Clutch seems good (how can I check how much clutch is left to go??) 80,000 miles on the motor. 106,000 miles on the body. Supossedely the first owner changed the engine after 25,000 miles. tasteful 15x7 alloy wheels (by Alessio???), LSD, 4 Pot brakes, AAS (how can i check if this still works, b/c i heard they breakdown quickly???), sunroof, power everything. All the accesories just add weight unfortunately, so im not sure how good that is?

The Problems...
1. The tranny problem above.
2. Slight motor oil leak (appox. puddle of 2 inch diameter overnight)
3. Slight exhuast leak.
4. I think i', slowly eating the clutch, as i'm a noob.
5. The brakes are VERY spongy...i've searched...when the car is off, its firm, when its on, it slowly goes to the floor...does it need to be bleed????<-- thats the main reason the guy sold it.
6. It's a N/A. (jk)

The fixes...
Find the leak (although I hear it's goddamn near immposible to find sometimes) and fix it (hopefully just a oil pan gasket).
Full fluid change, tune up, etc.
Supposedly new Master Cylinder, caliper, piston, and pads...so imma get some stainless brake lines (brand suggestion???) and try to bleed that bitch till its firm.
Eventually, I want the Mazdatrix exhuast the one that is true dual exhuast straight from engine to exhuast.

Me..My name is Jahan. I'm a student at Stony Brook University (anyone else out here or the island?) Limited money supply...so, im taking it slow and keeping it N/A...does 175rwhp sound crazy??

Thanks for reading that big *** post.

Peace

Hello, and welcome, New.

The brakes-

Same thing happened to me. I eventually lost brake pressure altogther. It turned out to be a dead master cylinder.

That's a great price too.

Yup, there are definately a couple of us out on the Island. I'm in north Nassau. If you want to have a really good, fair and honest mechanic to look at the car, talk to Brain at New Technology Automotive in Islip on Sunrise Highway. He is a former dealer mechanic and really knows the car well. He wont screw with you. Good luck.

A few questions....

Are there any 6 speed available or can I swap the GTU tranny into my car (in case my tranny goes and i hate overdrive!!).

Can you build a rotary engine, like forged rotors, etc... like forged pistons and crankshafts, etc???

There is no special GTU transmission. that is a myth. There is a different 5th gear ratio from the 89/90 GTUs that you could have installed when you have the transmission rebuilt. Finding a complete GTUs transmission in the junk yard........good luck, I don't think it will happen.

Very few companies make internal engine parts for the rotary. the only one that springs to mind now is Racing Beat. You typically do not need to "build" a rotary like you are describing building a piston engine. The stock internals are more than strong enough.

It may be possible to use a miata 6 speed transmission but I don't know how feasable this is.

Welcome to the club!! I've heard of 200hp at the crank, i don't know what that'd be at the wheels.

Dang, you're like 15-20 minutes from me. We should meet up when the weather gets nicer. I know some other guys with FCs on the Island.

WOW that #6 is a KILLER!! you should get rid of it ASAP!!

LOL j/k, its a good start... sounds like a new brake master cyl., a new exhaust system, an oil leak fix, some shifter bushings and you got yourself a good deal! 175 is definitely do-able, most ive heard is 220 or 225 with ported motor, full exhaust, full carb setup.. everything from RacingBeat! thats what i was gonna do, but some jackass rear ended my beloved n/a and totaled it... but lookie what i have now!

Brakes do sound like a bad master cyl or leaking brake booster.

And a 2 inch dia oil puddle over night is not a slight oil leak. Probably not the pan gasket, but the MOP or oil filter pedestal O rings or the oil lines between the oil cooler and the engine. Those are much more common failures than the oil pan.

Was just about to say that

i had to clean and tighten all the lines to the MOP and change my leaking oil cooler lines, which are now steel braided since the other ones seemed to have failed due to kinks

Welcome

First, do a search in the 2nd Gen archive for "beefy N/A". It takes a little commitment to read the full thread, but its got a tremendous ammount of good information. I dare say its a legendary thread.

From what I have read, 175rwhp is doable on a stockport, but takes a good deal of work. I wouldn't expect much more than that, if you can even get it.

Thanks for the welcome.

Beef i definately up for a meet, let me know.
LDiablo530@juno.com or drft_180sx@juno.com

I'll be checking the oil cooler lines today probbly.

Believe it or not the oil leak isnt that bad yet only like 1 quart every 500 miles

I dont know how much a new master cylinder is but i hope not too much considering the price of the oil lines are 130.

Nice car deltron i like the color.

Thanks zeta, il'll check it out.

Question.. how do I check if the AAS System still works???

jahan
