well you're on track towards a tune up. check your TPS, timing, vaccuum lines, tubes, hoses, brakes, clutch and all that good stuff. Once it's done then you're free to do anything you want.
Make sure you get some nice tires and/or rims to have maximum traction, do some suspension work, search for AAI for one of the better intake modifications
Looks like you're on the right track. post pics when you can.

change all you fluids and whatnot..
change you oil and oil filter and fuel filter for sure.
and is this car bone stock? or what. we all need a little more info to give you any major help.

Before you do anything else to it, get it checked. Find out what the compression is like first. Then do a solid tune up on it. ALL fluids, plugs, and vac lines, it doesn't cost too much and is pretty easy to do at home (not compression though). oh of course filters.
After that the Racing beat exhaust is THE best thing you can do to this car! It will really make it quick. Remember that you will need to get a fuel cut defender and some sort of furel mods to keep from detonating though. I recomend the Rtek 2.0, as it will give you both, plus alot of other mods.
good luck, and thank god you are getting away from hondas.

Get yourself a Factory service manual(FSM) or download one from somewhere. Here, I'll help you out, http://www.rx7city.com/techconnect.htm
These are just rough estimates
100+ is good compression
90+ is still ok
85 is acceptable, but don't expect it to last too long.

You already have a modded Honda you said? Okay RX-7 is same way except for:
1. If you ever overheat or run without coolant/oil the engine is toast (pull over immediately to save it).
2. DTSS
3. Be careful with the turbo. Before any serious upgrades get proper fuel mods, tune it to run rich. One good strong knock will kill a rotary. After the standard NA upgrades you can also get an intercooler, port the waste gate and increase the boost on the turbo. I don't know the details; use forum search tool. For some reason turbo guys love light flywheels too.
4. Use forum search tool and FAQ for any questions/problems.
For a short shifter, a lot of people like the miata short shifter. You can also use the forum search tool to find others.

1 rtek 1.7 + 720 sec inj
2 Hallman pro manual boost controller
3 FCD
4 exhaust
5 Port the wastegate(This should be done first!!!!!!)If you put on a full system you will have boost creep and run the chance of blowing your engine.

Even though you bought that damn car I wont hold a grudge.
Mazdatrix has a great short shifter. Definatly port your wastegate and get a good boost gauge and a fuel cut defender. Do 1 mod at a time so you can keep that nice car runnin perfect. Good luck with it.

well most of us seven owners do our own work, with exceptions of people that are incapable, i THINK fc3spro.com has a write up on how to do it.. you can do it yourself and save money ...
yes mazdatrix SS ftw, if you got connection and money c's shortshifter is great too... if you aint as rich and the bushings are good in your stock shifter, higgstrix shifter is nice (also sold at fc3spro.com... miatashifter.. is for... poor people that needs something better than stock, but not as good as mazdatrix, c's and higgs. i've only had experience with mazdatrix shifter and miata.
