um basically my gas and temp gauges are reading about twice to 1 1/2 what they should be. for a while they would read high on cold mornings, then when the car was warm suddenly they'd just drop like the car was turned off, (talking about the needle speed) and return to normal positions. but lately it won't return to it's normal reading, it only stays at twice the reading or
1 1/2... Hailers said it may be the meters in the gauge, or a something else... he said to ask you. do you know what it could be?

they're reporting twice what they should be. so if I've got a 1/4 of a tank of gas then it will read 1/2 or 3/8. sometimes more or less. and the temp gauge goes with it. like their connected somewhere and it's getting too much voltage or something.

So, anyway, Sneaky wrote this following thread: https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=185418
And he asked what wires the two units shared. Well they both share what I believe is a voltage regulator. So I says, *ask Icemark or NZConvertible" because they know all about electrical things. And that's where we are today. See the schematic of the combination meter for insite into the two units, fuel and temp gauges. Available online, at http://www.iluvmyrx7.com the 88 manual has the electrical schematics.

s4 sorry N/a 87 with a pineapple engine. I've also got an e-fan. but currently it's just jumpered off the battery with a 30 amp resistor/fuse. same as on the engine bay fuse box.

OH! thanks hailers I appreciate that. I'm pretty new to computers and don't know how to do that. also I can't seem to download those diagrams... it just goes straight to my media player.

There is a simple voltage regulator in the cluster that powers both the temp and fuel gauge, it may have failed (although the design is very simple, and looks almost impossible to fail).
I would first try to check for cold soldr joints, of if that doesn't do it, the replace the temp/fuel gauge assembly.

alright thank you very much. I just didn't want to shell out the 130 for the part. I need to search on how to check the cold solder joints. thanks everyone!

well I just wasn't sure if I wanted to try to reset the speedometer or not. but I looked and saw there are ways to do it. so that's probably the route I'll take. thanks again.

so you get a junkyard one, and either swap the speedo or swap the two gauges

that's probably what I'll do. but I'm going to have to buy the whole cluster anyways, all the junk yards are cleaned out. so I've got to get it from The Mazda/toyota recycler. 75 for the cluster. I'd rather wait for another rx to arrive in the junk yard (for price reasons) but I want to make sure I don't still have a coolant problem before summer. anyone out there got a cluster for cheap?

The S4 ones are on ebay all the time for like $10-$20
