HELP!! whats wrong with my car!!!

ok, my 87 is a little difficult to start, you have to hold the key for like 10 seconds and give it gas. when it starts it spudders a little and then proceeds to rev to about 4000 rpms!! it doesnt go down. i attempted to adjust the idle but with no luck, when i do that it sounds like its about to die. but the funny thing is, is that when you drive it it runs pretty good but at a stop it still revs just as high. after running it about 15 minutes and it still has power and is fully warmed up. i shut it off and then i guess when it feels like it (off and on) when you restart it (like today) after it sits like 20 minutes it idle up and down but not as high, about 1000-1800, and feels like it might die. is it electrical? a buddy of mine seems to think the rear rotor is shot. PLEASE HELP!!!

AFM freaking out on ya?
Throttle linkage OK?
Fuel pressure regulator stuck closed?
Does it run rough, or does the 4000 rpm feel fairly smooth?
Would a TPS do this, guys?

it runs smooth at the 4000 rpms... it runs like a bat outta hell when you drive it... but like i said sometimes it runs like crap too.... a lopey idle.. and it back fires really bad when you get on it.... a real nice flame out the exaust. i noticed also that one exaust pipe has smoke but the other doesnt and they both feel like they have the same amount of air flow. i was thinking tps but i dont know, how would i check it? replace it and hope for the best? and i didnt notice any vacuum leak

i neglected to mention the car had sat for quite some time too, dont know exactly how long, but had to do a tune up and a few other things to get it to initially run

Well that throws the "bad rotor" idea out the window...Have you had any experience reading out your sensor inputs to the ECU to see what everything's doing? If not, you will now...

If you've messed with the other cars' sensors (voltage readings, stuff like that), the rx7 should be a piece of cake for ya...You'll need to get your hands on the factory service manual (most guys download it- do a search), specifically section 4- it will list all the pin locations & proper voltages at the ECU (under the passenger side carpet, directly below the glove compt.)
