help with wastegate

Ok I have a S5 ported wastegate. I need to know how to check to see if it is working properly and what to look for.
I know that you have to take off the intake but what else do I have to do to remove the turbo?

Thanks,
Josh

you have to remove the oil, coolant and vacume lines. and unbolt it from the turbo manifold and downpipe.

thats all i could think of

Try this article. It's for an S4 but it's a similar procedure. There's also instructions in the FSM (like most stuff).

You shouldn't have to take the turbo off, but to visually inspect it would make it a ton easier.

Need more info. Why don't you think it's working properly?
The wastegate is normally closed, and opens to regulate boost. If it's not opening you'll know all about it because boost will skyrocket and your car will go very fast for a very short period of time before it dies. If it's stuck open you'll still be able to make full boost (because at full boost the wastegate's fully open anyway) but it'll take much longer to get there than it should.
If you have some way of applying pressure to the wastegate actuator, pull the hose off it and pump it up to ~5psi, when the actuator arm should start to move out.

Well I am having low boost problems so I figured that my wastegate may be stuck half open. I dont know what esle to look for as to why I am not hitting full boost.
Things just arent making sense anymore.

If the wastegate's stuck just open, boost would be low, but this doesn't seem very likely. How low is low? Remember the S5's have an electronic boost control system that uses a solenoid to bleed pressure from the wastegate actuator line to raise boost. It should be ~8psi (stock), but will only be 5-6psi if that system's not working. Grab the S5 FSM and read up on it, including the test procedures. Make sure all the vac lines are in place, etc. Also check for the obvious things like leaking IC plumbing or clogged cats and filters.

Reach down to the bottom of the turbo and grab the actuating arm (rod that is connected to a little arm at the back of the turbo) move it back and forward, it should move about an inch.

From reading his other posts, I think he said the problem is that he only gets like 4 psi in 1st, 6 in 2nd, and 8 in 3rd.

I know that he gets 5 psi in first, 8 in second, and then I think he finally boost to 10 in third and up.

Thanks Todd for explaining that and you are 100% correct.

Well with my avcr set up right and my duty cycle set to .8 I still am not able to hit full boost on my hybrid turbo. Which I just checked and that is fine.
I am about to go and check that acuator rod.

The plumbing seems to be fine and I have read the FSM alot and have learned so much from that and this forum.

I am tottaly at a loss if it isnt the wastegate. I really dont want to have to take the intake manifold off if I dont have to.

Thanks,
Josh
