my sun roof will not close, it is about 1/2 inch open and tilted all the way up. it moves back and forth very smoothly but will not fully close??

 

behind the sunroof theres a little circle clip thing in the headliner. pop that off. theres a spot under that to manually move the sunroof.

 

I manually opened mine a while back. Needless to say, it 100% refuses to close.

 

I get that issue on mine where it doesn't want to close the rest of the way. Sometimes I can move it back slightly and then forward to close. If not, WD40 has worked every time! Open it up, spray it liberally on the tracks and slide it forward to see if it will close. Anyway, works on mine since it's just a lube issue cuz it needs to be re-greased.

okay thanks. i used wd40 on the tracks and it definitely helped because the speed at which it moved increased. ill use the allen wrench to close it

that's cool that someone made me aware of the manual option to closing/opening the sun roof but it still wont close all the way. there has to be something stuck because on the driver side it was beginning to go down while on the passenger side it was stuck up still and i was cranking the hell out of it, really trying not to brake anything.

 

maybe the mechanical arm that lifts the sunroof is stuck so it won't lower? I don't know the sunroof in and out so I guess I'm not much help beyond spray and pray with WD40 and playing with the controls until it works. lol...Sorry

 

Try opening it by the switch,then blasting the hell out of the tracks with Silicone lube,and if you can see,the cables.
If not,get a buddy to help you do this:..get buddy to switch the sunroof to Down,and YOU try to coax the Sunroof to it's down position while the motors are putting the roof down.
You can also try that without the power if you like.

 

I did this too when mine was extra stubborn. I held the button while my brother pushed the roof forward. They can be a bitch when the tracks dry up.

 

Bite the bullet, remove the sunroof assembly and service it properly.
While you're at it relay the motor switch for improved operation.

If the sunroof is already at the point where it's "hard stuck", a little silicon spray isn't a long term fix.
Spend a weekend servicing it totally and you'll never have to screw with it again.

 

if its THAT stuck that the manual allen wrench method doesn't work then the cable that drives it is corroded/jammed with something/broken and you'll just have to take it apart to fix it.

That sucks. Not that far with mine...yet, but will be taking it apart soon anyway for a engine swap to a car that's got a fully rusted through sunroof frame.

There are a few plastic wear items in the track and a few plastic cable guides that will just continue wearing if you just grease them... It's best to clean out the 20 years worth of grime in there and relube the entire thing properly so it'll last longer.

I have a plexiglass sunroof that I need to install. I just need to get around to cleaning and lubing up the tracks so that I can install it.

okay thanks for everything. too bad my haynes manual doesn't have anything for sunroof removal. but it could be worse, at least there's no leakage since it rained yesterday, that's how close it is to closing, like .5 inch from being all the way forward and tilted up all the way

 

Haynes manual is not en depth enough for sunroof removal.

I haven't gotten into the body section of the FSM, but I do know that all the sunroofs for RX-7s are manufactured by a 3rd party. They're made by Webasto.

 

Remove the trim at the windshield,sides and back hatch.
remove rear view mirror/interior lights.
remove the Headliner.
When you go to remove the sunroof make sure that you "take the weight" of it undoing the bolts.
It comes down as a whole assembly..BAM!

 

Take the insert off the sunroof cover, unbolt the sunroof (this is the most weight).
Remove roof lining
unplug everything
only loosen the bolts on the rear, do not remove them completely (these bolts are essential for reinstalling on your own)
undo the rest of the bolts, i leaned the passenger seat forward to catch the sunroof.

I'll be replacing mine, I dont realize how strong i am sometimes and when trying to close the sunroof i honestly ripped it off. breaking the sunroof off the car...
