Question help with spark check now please!

Hey I was just going to check my spark with a homemade spark checker and I was wondering how I should go about doing it. Do I just unplug one of my spark plug wires from my spark plug and put in an extra plug and ground it to see what kind of spark I have?

My main question is is do I have to just turn it over or do I have to unplug them all or do I start it or what?

I'm pretty dumb so step by step CLEAR instructions would help.

If it's just spark your checking, pull one of the plug wires off of the plug and hold it near a ground while car at idle. Hold the wire with insulated pliers, or you won't need to ground the wire to see if it working.
