help! (s4-s5 question)

So I FINALLY found me a motor for my car, s5 jspec. ~$700ish.
My questions are: Is this significantly different than the s4 turbo block I've got? If I just take all my externals/intake, etc, but leave the s5 turbo and etc on, can I just swap this motor in? I realize that I'll have to either swap the front cover from my block OR run premix. Is there anything else? I don't want this motor if I'll have to hack up my car, I can find an s4 for the same price, but, well, its an s4. It's also far away, this is just down the road from me Only about a 2 hour drive.

What all would I need to swap, to get it to run?
(yeah, I searched, couldn't find nuffin.)

Thanks!

what year S4 car???

if it is an 87 the injectors will need to be swapped as well as the front cover.

There also is no EGR on the Jspecs

It's an 88. 10AE power

The egr is a manifod type deal, right? Not on the block, so it can be swapped on?

Shouldn't have too many problems, just swap everything over from the intake and front cover, from the old motor to the new. The EGR stuff on the S4 13BT is through the housing, so you'll not have that using the Jspec. It shouldn't be a problem unless your area has inspection for EGR operation for smog/emissions.

The only other thing that comes to mind is that the 89+ 13BT uses a different flywheel, (and many jspecs come with auto flywheels), so you'll need to swap your clutch stuff too (unless the Jpsec comes with a good one) and possibly purchase a light weight flywheel. The S4 manual tranny flywheel can't be used on a S5 manual tranny engine (because of weight and spline issues).

Hmm...
my area DOES have emmissions though.. I'll have to figure something out there. I might be able to get around emmissions testing though, I'll ask at minitrans tonight... I think we've got some weirdass law that allows yout o get around it IF you are swapping an engine into your car that wasn't available in this market in that model.

I think that this engine has a flywheel and clutch, but I'll make sure I ask.

I believe the turbo oil return lines were different lengths, so you may have to swap those around (since they don't reach once you swap the front cover)

What if I'm using the s5 turbo/manifold though? hmm, this seems like it might be a bigger project than I bargained for....

Doesn't matter. It's the oil lines themselves. On the s4 I think the return line was shorter and the connecting return pipe from the front cover was straight, on the s5's it's angeled, and the line is longer, or it could be reversed, but either way I know they don't line up (and even if you swap the pipes they won't match up because they were in different locations) It's just a matter of swapping out the oil line so that it matches the series 4 front cover, shouldn't be all too complex.

ok, cool. Should be do-able.

So, I need to swap my front cover on the block, oil lines for turbo, intake, tb, fuel rails, etc (basically everything), but I can keep the turbo+exhaust manifold. Anything else on the s5 easy to leave on with a performance upgrade?

You can keep your s5 primary fuel rail, as it's not as likely to leak as the s4 PD.

Only because of it's age...

I actually have seen more S5 and S6 PD's leak than I have S4's. Replaceing with a S5 rail is a mistake on a S4. Just replace the S4 PD with a new one at a considerably cheaper cost than replacing the whole lame integrated rail and PD that the S5 models have.

hmmm... My PD assembly seems to be in good shape, I'll probably use it. It's only got 80k km on it anyways, that's not much.

*shrug* Mine was in horrible condition so I slapped on the series 5. Thanks for the tip Icemark, I'll probably change it all out soon.
